Ray, while I would concur about the 'possibility' of a fake sale, there is absolutely no way to monitor it. I would ask the same question as Wombat here, what do you want to happen ?

I just responded to Wombat and thank you for your question and your correct. There is probably no way we could monitor it plus there is a chance I could be wrong. I just wanted to inform the board because maybe there was rules against this and some way to see if the sale actually happened.

I wouldn't link it. As soon as he outs the person he will get hung out to dry and questions like "what's your eBay ID so I can block you." Without proof it's not worth the drama.

Unlike shill bidding where a fake account can be used to prove it happened a book listed for sale could have been sold privately, in person, at any price. If you are skeptical about the amount it sold for you can rest assured that others will be as well but there is simply no way to prove that someone is lying about selling a book.

Even if the seller were to list the same exact book for sale 60 days from now he could simply say that the buyer returned it for a refund.

They may have sold for less than was posted. Negotiations happen by PM all the time.

Yes I understand that but even if the offer was $800 less than the original price it still would have been to high. There was also very little traffic inside the thread. Of course there could have been an offer through PM but I don't see any realistic way this sold unless it sold for way less then the original asking price. Hours after the add appeared I contacted the seller and discussed the price with him. He said he understands that the price is high but that's the way he values them and he would stay firm on his price. Therefore, unless he changed his mind over night and took at least $1,000 less than what he was originally asking he did not sell the comics for a lower price. That means one of two things happened: The seller sold the comics at his original price or very close to it or he never made the sale. If he made the sale that means someone on our site paid about $1,000 over what they could have purchased them for on EBAY. Plus like I said these comics are up for sale ample times on our website and they rarely if ever sell unless they are priced right.

IMO I seriously doubt a sale happened. In fact if there was some way to actually now for sure I would happily bet at least $1,000 that it never happened. I see price manipulation happening all the time on EBAY and I hope it does not start here.

Is the practice of this site to just accept that the seller is on the level? If that's the case then I will stop thinking about this. I posted this because I don't know what the board does in situations like this. Is this something that is just ignored or do we have past examples of this happening.

Asking $800 - $1000 over the value sounds unusually high, even for here. I feel your suspicions may be right, but again I don't think there is much you can do about it except don't deal with that person.

No that would not be the right thing to do. There is a chance that the seller actually sold the comic. Like I said I wanted to see if there was a rule against this and if this type of behavior happened in the past. I appreciate the comments guys and I sure hope I'm wrong.

I wouldn't have brought this up then. 2c

Like I said it was brought up in case there was something that could be done and to warn the board in case this was against the rules. After numerous posts it appears that nothing can be done. Since it's not against the rules and nothing can be done why would I reveal who did this? What happens if he really sold the comics? I seriously doubt he did but there is a chance. Since it can't be verified if he did it's a dead issue.

So what exactly do you want to have happen? Make him produce details of a sale?

Ray, while I would concur about the 'possibility' of a fake sale, there is absolutely no way to monitor it. I would ask the same question as Wombat here, what do you want to happen ?

I would take the sales on this chat forum the way I take sales out in the wild or outliers on GPA...if it's too good to be true it probably is.

Nobody is going to spend silly money here when they can buy it cheaper on eBay or elsewhere.

I would also have no problem posting a link to the thread as the seller is already out there selling on this very forum, so it's not a secret.

If the seller has nothing to hide he has nothing to worry about but if he is pulling something then raising awareness in a community is the right thing to do so that people can keep an eye on it.

You wouldn't be doing anything wrong by pointing out who it is.

Agreed.

That is the purpose of this "DISCUSSION" thread.

Everyone here realizes it may have sold via PM, so there is no reason not to link the thread.

Heck, he just may not like folks named ray and won't budge on the price to them. Anyone else, "Sure $1000 discount!!!!"

Also, ray, there is a little button at the bottom right of every post that says "Quote". It makes the conversation much easier to follow when quoting someone else.

How could anyone hate Roys? That just doesn't make sense?

(It was just convenient to put the note to ray in the same post responding to your's, Roy. I am pretty sure you figured out the Quote function several thousand posts ago)

I really need to think more about postcount...

I understand what you are saying here. What makes matters worse now board and non members run web sites where they hype up books and then sell them. Double dipping hypocrisy is getting rampant in our industry now.

Even now our board allows things such as mystery boxes under the pretense that its okay by allowing such and such rules. Really we are no better then ebay or amazon anymore.
