Coming up in the summer auction at HA.  Another "restoration removal" copy

Screen Shot 2023-04-01 at 4.34.34 PM.png

Still better than the AF15 in opinion i could live with that

My former copy years ago. Bought it raw and slabbed it. As far as I know, there was no color touch removal.

Looks classic and highest graded Bakers are still red hot/unhinged...

Yes indeed, and it looks like if you are only willing to spend in the near or low teens for a copy of this book, best to do it sooner rather than later:  :luhv:

Golden Age (1938-1955):Adventure, Seven Seas Comics #4 (Universal Phoenix Feature, 1947) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white pages....

Since it looks like $14,340 would have fetched you a nice attractive looking CGC 8.5 graded copy of this book back in 2017;

Golden Age (1938-1955):Adventure, Seven Seas Comics #4 (Universal Phoenix Feature, 1947) CGC VG/FN 5.0 Off-white to white pages....

While $12K would have fetched you only a mid-grade CGC 5.0 graded copy of this Baker classic cover back in November of 2022.

So, fast forward to only a few short months later and $13.2K only fetches you a CGC 3.5 graded copy of this book here.  You never know, but if you wait too long, the low teens might only be fetching you a CGC 2.0 graded copy of this book in the not too distant future.  hm  (shrug)

Web of Mystery 8 in 7.0 for $6600.  Good lord.

Formerly under-appreciated cover

I guess the artist couldn't make up his mind on what would do it, so decided to cover all of the bases with his cover here.  :luhv:

He's got the alluring and tantilizing damsel in bondage to the spider web, the hungry spider in heat, and the skull and bones to top it off.  (thumbsu

I bid early bit got outbid.  It was sitting at around 6k a few days before the auction closed so I was thinking I may have a shot.

Just curious, what were you thinking it might end at? If you had a number in mind of course. It was such an up in the air book. 15 Blue, 7 restos, and that's it. I saw no past restored sales, a 1.0 for 6,600 in 2021, 6.0 for 56K in 2019 and the deal of the year a 9.4 for 32k in 2017 and the other 9.4 , the Berk for 68k a few months prior to the other. I was hoping it wouldn't go higher than 10 or 11k but I guess we weren't the only ones interested in it.

Marvel Tales 95.jpg

saw that as well, but thats an unattractive copy and no disrespect to the buyer, but I wouldn't  want that crooked book in my collection

I was hoping for less than $12k.  I figured the restoration would hold it back more.

CGC Business Planning Meeting Notes:

  Let's pay a really stupid outrageous price as a tax write-off at auction for what is otherwise an absolutely worthless book, but one that is stashed away by the thousands in ultra HG by collectors and then just sit back and watch the submissions come pouring in.    lol

I know you were making a joke about CGC here but your statement that I quoted likely explains many of the flip-for-a-loss auctions we are seeing.

Although I am sure that the tax department will gladly chase after you for your capital gains on your comic book investments, not sure if they will be just as willing to go with your losses on your funny books that you brought at stupid prices.  (:

Well, in that case, I've got a ton of worthless late 80's B&W's and early 90's Valiant garbage that should qualify for a 100% tax write-off then.

Thank God and thank my wallet that I never got into Image at least.  lol

How much were you paying for those that would now qualify for a loss?

Pre-Unity Valiants in 9.6 and 9.8 get decent prices.  Assuming you bought off the newsstand, even after slabbing costs you'd probably make money.

MH Shadow Comics v3 #10 (9.6 W) went for $10,200!  :whatthe:

It last sold on Heritage for $1912 in May 2014.

You mean this little "classic cover" beauty here :p, but then it does have the start of the Doc Savage (who TF????) series in this issue here:

Golden Age (1938-1955):Superhero, Shadow Comics V3#10 Mile High Pedigree (Street & Smith, 1944) CGC NM+ 9.6 White pages....

Does this mean that I've finally got a chance to break even on my two Church copies of the early Doc Savage issues after having them sit here collecting dust for some 30+ long years.    :taptaptap:  :taptaptap:
