Something a little different for me: A pair of early 1990s album covers from "West Coast Diaries Vol 2 and 3" by musician Charlie Peacock. The art was done by his guitarist, Jimmy Abegg. First he did a painting, then photographed it, made 11x14 prints of the photograph, and then painted those further. The result was three album covers, one for each volume of West Coast Diaries. The red cover sold years ago, but the artist still had the yellow and blue covers.

      Really pleased with Thomas Pitilli here. I commissioned Thomas to draw inspiration from Batman the Animated Series and the episode Joker's Favor when Harley Quinn and Joker first meet. I suggested a few bread crumbs but otherwise left the execution to his imagination. We agreed that Bruce Timm is an inspiration but wanted the Pitilli style to make it his own artistic vision. I'm very pleased with the results.

I asked him why he mirror-imaged it for the inked version, and he said that it allowed him to catch errors in his pencil work. I never heard that before, so I thought I would pass it on.

By the way, this is what the final, published art will look like:

Now, that's $1,500 well spent, in my opinion.

 

I think sometimes when you do your best to convince the mob that they don't have to spend 5 figures to get quality artwork, maybe you should include your proof like this beauty. Money well spent my friend.

An Alex Ross page finally came up in my price range. Ray Palmer is recuperating from one sneak attack with his wife Jean, while Giganta enters the room disguised as a nurse, preparing to attack again.

Picked up my first piece of OA from an estate sale: a Stan Lynde piece. I believe it’s a Rick O’Shay strip (it’s from 1976). I really liked the dialogue in it, and it features a judge coming down all fire-and-brimstone on a guy named Will Masters (I don’t know if he’s a villain in the strip or what). Not part of my focus, but too cool to pass up!

Marvel Treasury #23 (1979) is a classic John Buscema Conan cover with bold Joe Sinnott inks.

Just won it.

Someone keeps cornering the market on Silver Surfer comic book art (He's also a very decent guy so I'm glad it all goes to a good home). so I had to look at other options to add some Silver Surfer OA in my price range to my collection. 

My first love when it came to O.A. was animation art.   Back in the 90's I had started picking things up when I worked for Disney.   If pieces came into the collectables department, I looked over the production art before it hit the floor to see if it should come home with me. 

Each Silver Surfer lot came with the hand painted production cel, the original pencils but more importantly the original background which are tough to find.   Animation art is tough for Silver Surfer as the series was pretty short.  With each piece matching up to it's corresponding counterpart in the production process, it is a pretty cool find. 

There are eight pictures in this post.  The first two pics are what the images look like combined.  The second is the breakdown of the three pieces once separated. 

I am pleased.  $1100 + tax.  The question as to how much this stuff is "worth" is subjective.  There are images that could have sold for less but it is harder to find the matching pencils along with the production background.   So for that perhaps it could have gone for more with a difference audience. 

I also felt like the larger image of the head and torso was closer to something one would see as pop art.

My daughters' inheritance continues to be squandered. This weekend I met Matthew Klein (writer) and Morgan Been (artist, no FB page that I could find) of the new 5-issue mini-series Crashing at a signing at my LCS, Bedrock City Comic Co.

 

Crashing features a young doctor working at Mass General in Boston. A somewhat different Boston since it has native population of "powered" people who - as one might expect - need treatment. Rose is a dedicated physician who deeply believes that she's there to care for all patients. In the hospital, that can mean breaking rules, but that's not the only place she treats powered patients. Even the bad guys need help.

 

Rose has another problem - she's an addict, pills and alcohol. Her job doesn't do much to help with that to say the least.

 

Morgan brought pages from the book and I bought the first two - first appearances are big! Okay, not always, but I really liked her work on the book.
