Flash #140 CGC 5.5 - First Heat Wave

I need only two more books, and I believe I will be satisfied with my Flash collection. I need to get Flash #121 (Trickster cover) and Flash #174 (classic cover) in CGC 7.0 or higher. I might possibly add Flash #112 (first Elongated Man). I wouldn't mind adding other Flash books to my collection, but I have collecting goals that I would like to focus on now.

How/when did you land your SC 4?  That's an exclusive club for sure.

I bought it from an Ebay seller in December, 2021, but I didn't buy it through Ebay.

I had to sell quite a few books to afford it, such as IH #181 CGC 8.5, GSXM #1 7.5, FF #13 CGC 7.5, BatB #54 CGC 4.5, along with a few others that I have forgotten. I have gotten a replacement for FF #13, but I am still hoping to replace the others.

Love this issue! For a while there 109 was my lowest number Flash. I remember celebrating over on the 10 cent thread when I first got it. I was new here and I don't even think I had found this thread yet. I believe I posted a photo of it with me and a congratulatory cigar in my mouth.

This is a very impressive collection to say the least! Even if you don't get the 112, 121 and 174 you have truly accomplished great things my Flash friend!

This is very strange to see such a wide variation on these colors. Most of these variations can probably be explained by color fading over the years and exposure to light. But it does seem as though there may have been a color issue at the press when printing some of these issues. Typically in the four color process it takes some time to get the colors balanced correctly. The pressman will run the covers through, pulling out a few here and there, look at them with his loop, checking carefully against a mock up until the right balance is achieved. All those should be thrown away as spoilage, but some may have been used that were out of balance. Also, during the run if one of the 4 colors is running low, new ink may be added and this too can cause an imbalance as a flood of fresh ink (say magenta for example) runs over the plates. Conversely if say yellow started to run low the cyan and magenta colors would start to look richer. The pressman should be watching for these imbalances and discard these as spoilage until balance is achieved again.

I thought the same thing for years, could not understand why some greens were so dark on the SC8, and thought the different blues was age related. The two most talked about examples are FF1 and SC22  dealing with the green. There used to be a favoritism for the very dark green on FF1 not sure how fans reacted to the SC22.

I don't understand the printing process completely, but as the run continued on greens, blues and purples changed. All came out of the same run, all could be candidates for white pages etc. Just part of the printing process on something expected to be thrown in the trash next month.

Here is another DC issue where the color varies dramatically. The first two must have been toward the end of the print one, and the last two must have been toward the front of the print run.

I have been lucking for this book for a while, but I'm not going to purchase it unless I can get a copy similar to the last two books pictured.

So Mr.Freeze, Titano, Mirror Master all debut in the same month. Cool. Does anyone know if Showcase 4 shows up as a solicit advertisement in any of the DC issues before its debut?

I believe it did but I will need another Flash fan to confirm which titles SC4 was advertised in. Maybe SC#3? Challengers of the Unknown maybe?

I tried to do a little research and read through DC 235, AC 220, Superman 108 and Batman 102 from September 1956 and there were no ads. You would think that if they were going to have an ad it would be in their 4 biggest circulated books. I think it's more a case of they didn't think it was going to be a hit and it's just another character so they didnt advertise.🤷‍♂️
