I collected from the 70's through the 90's. Now I'm digging through to find out what I have...

I always said it would be a neat thing to be able to hand my comics down to my kids but I've grown detached from them to such a degree that I barely remember buying them, or in many cases, ever reading them. The sad part about seriously collecting comics is the idea that they become less valuable if you ever open them and actually read the stories or look at the artwork.

The great irony is that the better the story or art, the less likely it is that they will ever be cracked open, lest they lose their luster. I'm confident that our society has pristine copies of the landmark books nowadays, so I'm not so sure I care if I let mine go. Of course, I'd like to get top dollar for the ones I have, so I will probably have them graded and locked away in their transparent cages. Hypocritical, I know, but a buck is a buck.

Do I dare thumb through each of my favorites one last time or will it drop me to NM from GEM and cost me triple digits?

The book Dreamwalker #0 was the 1st. app. per Avatar and Jenni Gregory of Dreamwalker. Avatar Ill was put out extremly late at the end of the year (dec. 1998) It was slated to come out in the Summer. As we all know an ad dose not mean 1st app. anyways.

If everyone said the 1st. app. of a character was an ad then the fallowing would be true . The Crow's 1st. app. would be in Moon Trap one shot from Caliber with an ad in the back. Continum #1 would be the first Dawn app. because of the ad and 1st. app.of Hellboy would be First Dime Press ? Now all artist say these are not the 1st. app. and they should know . A 1st app. is defined by the first use in a comic story. Now i know Eric Powell did not know of the the printing of the story in Dreamwalker #0 and was very surprised when i showed him it . I am the person who started the whole mess with my find just fliping through Dreamwalker at my comic store "Comics Conspiracy"

When I say I'm going to do something, WATCH OUT!

Since announcing my new strategy to refocus my comic collecting efforts, I have made significant progress:

    1. I have moved from number 9 to number 6 in the DC Bronze Age First Issues set.

    2. I have moved from number 7 to number 2 in the Superman/Batman set.

    3. I have moved from number 8 to number 6 in the Transformers 1984 set.

Time to go spend ... i mean INVEST ... more money!

    Ok, I've finally given in...

Ok, I've finally given in... My first journal. My 1st priority is to complete the Transformers INFILTRATION set, one of the mountains in the way of doing this is obtaining Guido Guidi signatures (frustration), I hope that He shows up at a con some time in the near future, I also understand that this is probably difficult for him since He lives in spain, or italy, darn I forgot which at the moment (sorry it's 4 in the a.m.)... to be cont.

    CGC won't like this.

I sent in 30 books which were received by CGC (according to their website) on 06/01 and I sent in 11 books which were received by CGC (according to their website) on 06/05. They were to be sent back to me via 40 days. I got the 30 books back this friday (09/05) and the other batch was recently graded (09/05) but have not yet been received. I contacted CGC about this and received the "we're very busy due to conventions and onsite grading" This I can understand to a fault.

The fact that the day after I contacted them my books (already 20 days overdue) were suddenly changed from "verified" to "scheduled to grading" to "graded" occurred within 2 days. Now, I grade everything myself before I send it in, and the grades I received were not what myself or the dealors that I purchased them from had graded them as.

Now I am no math major, but grading 30 books in a days time is impressive, especially by CGC standards. The same could be said by the fact that the 11 books I submitted were done identically ("scheduled to grade" to "graded" within 1 days time). I am incredibly disappointed in the quality of grading based on the range of grades that I submitted (dealers and myself submitted books ranging from 7.5 to 9.2) which came back at lower than expected grades. (6.0 to 9.0)

I would hate to think that was due to high volume and thus hasted the grading process, but one has to wonder. When you have others look at the final result and they conclude that an issue that looks 7.0 appears to be identical to one that is 8.5, it really makes your mind wonder.

CGC is a monopoly and can set the bar at any standard it wants, but this person will not be submitting any future books until CGC can decide some baseline to which they begin grading their books and providing there customers with a detailed list of their books defects.

    Good luck everyone!

    The best is knowing

I was guided here and immediately felt like this is 'home'. I am excited about this new venture where I could probably meet some of you here and share with you some of my ideas and/or opinions.

Hope we are able to discuss a common interest that brings good grades.

  4. Finally learned how to edit my scans,(thats just great)1st year is over.

Hello, I have really enjoyed being here at C.S, some of you know when I joined I wasn't good at all on a PC (read bio) there were many times I wanted to upload my graded comics, but didn't know how to edit, or where to start, but now I know. As my 1st year ends, I just want to leave a few photo scans of my recent grades.

  5. Thanks to a fellow Joe Collector on the CGC forum boards and a copy other purchase this week I'm edging ever closer to the complete GI Joe CGC 9.8 collection.

Thanks to a fellow Joe Collector on the CGC forum boards and a copy other purchase this week I'm edging ever closer to the complete GI Joe CGC 9.8 collection. I currently need 9 additional 9.8's to go:

    45 (no 9.8's on census)

    88

    91 (no 9.8's on census)

    106 (no 9.8's on census)

    110

    122

    125 (no 9.8's on census)

    Yearbook #2

Yearbook #4 (no 9.8's on census)

So... until the point that there is a 9.8 copy of each I guess I'm really only looking for 88, 110, 122, & Yearbook #2.

    If I can get ahold of a 9.6 or a 9.8 of 88 and 110 then I'll have 100% of the collection - just not at 9.8.....

    Patients I guess......

I consider a comic's quality based on how well its taken care of and what it means to me as an individual. In the comic sense, the saying goes "its built over time."

Finally got my first two submissions back, Modern Fast track, and my goal in subbing

Well after a long wait(and I mean long) I got two submissions back. The grades were pretty much what I thought I was going to get except for two.

    The grades where as follow:

    2 Amazing Spider-man 583 first print Obama variant - both were 9.8's

    Amazing Spider-man 583 - 9.8

    NYX #3 - 9.8

NYX #5 - 9.8 Qualified(It was signed by Joe Quesada

    Ultimatum #3 Sketch Variant - 9.8

    Uncanny X-men #266 - 8.5

    Astonishing X-men #1 Cassaday Variant - 9.2 :(

    Ultimate Power #1 Sketch Variant -9.6 :(

those were the grades. The only two that I was upset with were the Astonishing X-men and the Ultimate power. They both looked like 9.8's to me when I sent them in but oh well thats why they get paid to grade comics and I don't.

The Ultimate power I tried Modern fast track and I got it back the same day as the others that I submitted two months ahead. I just wanted to see how fast it would be since I had a little extra money on my hands. It took a week and a half from me mailing it to receiving it back. I think I might do more fast tracks from now on if.

Now to my goal. I want to submit a 9.9 or 10! This is what I am going to start shooting for to find the right comic that can give me that magical number. Also I can't wait till I get my sketch from Andrew Magnum back. He drew a killer Magneto for me. I hope I get it before the Dallas Comic Convention in August so I can take a picture with him and the sketch. All in all I am so glad that this wait is over now I just got to wait on my sub that I sent in early june to get back to me.

    three to go!

So I snagged a nice raw copy of Superboy 4 that I will be taking to San Diego to submit to CGC. I want to add it to my registry set. These now leaves me with three issues to go!

I will make my prediction here that I hope to get about a 6.0 on this copy and WHITE pages!

Thoughts and reflections on reading a personal grail for the first time.

This morning was the day. Ever since my All-Star 8 arrived in the mail on Thursday I had reserved Saturday morning to sit and read through it. I had read the DC Archive column that had the reprint of the issue before but I just had to sit down and read the story from the actual comic itself. What I wasn't prepared for was the actual experience that would take place. Reading the reprint was good but somehow reading the actual comic was better. The feel of the comic in my hand combined with the actual inks on the page and the wonderful smell of the newsprint combined to create a sensory experience that no reprint can ever hope to imbue. I found myself imagining what it must have been like for the person who picked the book off the newsstand back in 1941 when this book came out. What impact did this book have on them? What were their thoughts seeing Wonder Woman for the first time. Was it a little girl who read it and thought "Wow! I wanna be like her!" or a little boy who stumbled upon the Wonder Woman after he had read through the book rooting for the Justice Society of America as they searched to capture Professor Elba. Then I found myself wondering what it must have been like for William Marston to see his hopes and dreams for a role model for young girls in print, available for the first time, for the masses. Did he even dream that she would become the most iconic heroine of all time? Could he have fathomed the impact she would have to the generations to come? As I turned through the pages hearing the sound as the pages moved, took each image, word, feel, and smell in I couldn't help but be reminded of how important comic books really are as a means of recording history, creating change and disseminating thoughts and ideas to society. I also understood why it was important for me to actually read a true copy and not a reprint. The reprint is one dimensional. It shows the frame of what's there but doesn't create the totality of the experience. People have said to me "Why spend so much time and money to buy something when you can just spend $20 and buy a book with a bunch of the stories in it?" I never really understood the drive I had or had an answer until now.

  13. What to do?

Just inherited 500+ comics Iron Man, Spiderman and about 100 Captain America.

My friend was collector...bought one to save, perserve and file/ bought one to read.

I only have the filed ones and they are brand new! (Or they look brand new...will have to send them in to get rated.

I have looked at ebay and a few comic sites to see the market on some..many date to the early 70's. I am not a rich person. How should I proceed...with which GCG plan? ( I know I have a Spiderman 25th anniversary unopened. Don't have any of the first ones and can see that most of the most sought after ones are not there....still these are unread)

Which CGC plan is the most economical? I have numbered everything. I don't have $500 to even start....should I just send one at a time?

My husband is an illustrator/art director for CG graphics and worked on the first 2 Spiderman films at Sony Imageworks. He knows nothing about this stuff. Just thinks it is cool that we have this collection.

Any input would be most appreciated!

First 5 comics I've sent to CGC

    Sent 5 Comics to CGC last months. Fantastic Four # 48 & 50, Captain America # 100, Marvel Tales # 1, and The Incredible Hulk # 102.

After 46 years, the first of my collection finally get professionally graded and given a permanent space age home and never have to worry about silverfish again.

I finally had a chance to equate my grading with the professionals, and I was not too disappointed. I could totally see why the FF s ## 48 & 50 (the first 2 of the 5 I got back to this date) received the grades they did.

Modern age leads to variant mania

i love comic books, im relatively new to comics, but since i started reading and collecting the summer of 08' i became encompassed by marvel comics and marvel variants. my overall collection has grown to 350 books and around 70 retailer incentives variants, and i have gotten the majority off of ebay. but as i look back at modern age comics this age is quickly turning into the variant age.

I support the original cover and artist by avoiding variants.

When I pick up a new Marvel comic these days there is often a variant cover offered. Personally, I would rather get the original cover because I like getting the set crew's work. I like to get the original assigned artist's vision of what the comic is about or what the comic should convey.

Plus, whatever happen to the old days when it was very rare if there were multiple covers? It made a variant more valuable.

I almost always miss out on the comic cover that turns into an expensive book (the Barack covers of ASM), but I like to support Marvel's original choices of artist. In a weird way, it makes me feel as if I am more loyal to Marvel...though buying multiple covers of the same issue would allow them to profit more and in turn make me seem more loyal...but still.
