Iron Man #1, X-Men #12 (first appearance of Juggernaut), Tales of Suspense #81

After checking, rechecking, doublechecking and triplechecking every day for the past two weeks, my first order status has finally moved from 'verified' to 'graded.'

Quick history: I bought an Iron Man #1 labeled 'MINT!!!!' from a store several years ago, put all of my comics in storage and recently unearthed them to sell on eBay, etc. Of course it took 3 weeks to FIND the comics, and it they were in the absolute LAST box I unopened, but nonetheless I was pretty happy with the find.

First step was to take them to a local comic shop to get the owner's impression on any that might be of value. I figured the Iron Man #1 was close to mint, but as the owner pointed out, there were some minor imperfections and a glance of the side one could see the pages were no longer white. On the flip side, I also discovered that I had bought a beautiful copy of X-Men 12, probably at the same time that I bought #94,#95,#96, and #100 (which were not in the best shape). I also had a decent-looking Tales of Suspense #81.

After selling X-Men #94,#95,#96 and #100 as a lot on eBay for a decent price, probably about 85-90% to raw book value, I invested the some of the sale in a collectors society membership, and then waited for my coupon to show up in the mail. Within a couple of weeks I had shipped off Iron Man, X-Men #12 and TOS #81 to Florida for grading.

The comic shop owner figured each would fetch between a 6 or an 8 depending on who looked at the books. I was hopeful for 8 to 8.5, and perhaps a 7.5 on the TOS- which was again just a throw in.

Well, three weeks later my order status finally changed, and the results are as follows:

    Iron Man #1 9.0 (off-white pages)

    X-Men #12 9.2 (off-white pages)

    TOS #81 8.5 (off-white pages)

    Swwwwwwwwweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now I need to figure out if I'm going to try to flip these or hold on to them. Either way, the CGC book value on these jumped $2k over what I paid for them back in 1995.

Now I'm definitely going to have to submit another order before the year is out and the prices go up!

Can't wait to get these puppies back in my hands.

  2. If a $5 handling fee is what it takes to get you members to act; then great!

CGC is standing alone in this business of third party grading. They are in bed with all the major comic companies and dealers. Thy charge a $5 handling fee because they know as comic collectors we will pay it. Until a better company comes along CGC will continue to exploit the consumer to make more money. CGC's first business is to make money and they have proven that time and again. There are some of you who are brand loyal to them. It is understandable, given that no other third party grading company can compare to CGC. It is for that reason that CGC will keep nickel and diming us.

None can meet the standards set by CGC currently. I have talked with Daniel from PGX personally and I believe he is on the right track. He knows what needs to be done, but has yet to do it. As collectors we have everything to gain from PGX, and other third party grading companies, that meet the proper standards and challenge CGC. CGC does not have a definitive monopoly right now, but they essentially have one. When CGC is given equal competition we all stand to gain. CGC's business model is a reflection of what Americans are standing up against across the United States. Truly take a step back and look through an objective lens at the facts.

I am done with CGC. I will no longer be adding to my registry account and will no longer post. I am done with grading for now and will proverbially "put my money where my mouth is". I was up for renewal on 12/6 and refused to do it.

This journal is undoubtedly going to upset some of you. I hope so. For others I hope this journal is impetus enough to stand up and defend your hobby from injustice and greed. Make a stand; put what needs to be done above your own desires. Shake off any apathy you may carry. Be responsible. Be accountable. Just be something.

    July 28th Economy's are graded!

Well, today was finally the day. After calling and bugging the CGC staff every other day for the past three weeks (sorry Nicole & Jenna(?)) I was rewarded with news that my economy submission from July 28th had been given 'preliminary grades!'

I can't tell you how important this was to me, as this order of eight books was my very first submission to CGC -- I went thru Heritage Auctions, thus I couldn't check order online --and I had submitted the books just to get an idea how similar comics in my newly acquired collection would grade.

Since that time, I have joined CGC and had 2 other orders submitted and returned, but this original order was a straight forward economy one that I turned in - not aware of the backlog that comic cons can cause, etc. -- (from now on I always will fasttrack!)

Anyway, this was also an important litmus test to decide if I should bother slabbing other books. If they graded poorly, then what was the point, right? When I first started inventorying the collection from my father-in-law, I couldn't even guess to the quality of the books. I had read the grading guidelines in Overstreet & on comicshop websites, but I was still in the dark.

I didn't carry much hope of decent grades for the books, and expected all of them to end up being 'reader' copies.

Happily I was wrong. I shipped my order back in July with a Wonder Woman 126, Captain America 100,(a low quality copy, but I wanted to slab it anyway) and then six older issues of X-men between 15 - 100.

Most of the collection was X-men, so I was mostly curious how they would turn out.

My uneducated estimates (and to keep my hopes down) were that the WW and CaptAmerica would grade around 4 or 5, and all the X-men would be in the 7.0 range. -- I was hopeful, but trying to be realistic.

Well, surprise! Turns out I'm a horrible grader.

I should definitely stick with my day job!

    The WW was a 7.0

    CA was a 6.0 (I'll take it!)

and all the X-men were either 8.0 or 8.5

EXCEPT for the X-men #100 that came back a 9.4!!!!

Can't tell you how much that made my day! And if you haven't guessed by now, I am totally addicted to collecting... I'll be sending another order (not economy!) back to CGC soon!!

    This is so much fun!

My favorite topic sure does draw the battle lines!

Greatings and salutations fans, friends and foes! I see turn around times still rule the boards and harsh words sometimes flow. After reading the last half dozen journals it's really great to see some of the old foes are playing nice. I would like to touch on fact or fiction; Who said the company lost two graders? Last I heard they had Three to many! So they are up one,no wait six months ago they lost three,so how many is that? See how these excuses cause problems! Remember a few months ago when the company took friday's off during "the season"and closed down for conventions. I dispelled that rumor with fact and now it's all but forgotten and it's no longer one of the "excuses". Which bring out the big one again, I read through all the CGC paperwork I have as back as 2003 and not one word about longer waits during "the season". I know many consider this to be fact but if con season is eight months,as recently posted, it would be factored in the estimate times.Another one is a few months ago a big dog insisted that the CGC would not be at conventions till Spring yet there they were at the Long Beach CA comic-con over the Halloween weekend taking submissions. where else will they be before Spring? If they really are so backed up why are they out hussling up more work.(2nd rule of business:"There is no such thing as too much work"!) Not that I like to beat the same old dead horse(stop reading if I'm makin yah nuts)but I'm in this for the long haul. Remember I'm on a one year mission, sending in 30 value tier books ever month and a half.My latest took 91 business days, May 25th to October 12th,four and a half months. Yeah,I know sucks doesn't it! My quickest was 68 b days submitted back in April.Since this is the slowest tier I think a few of you are exaggerating when you say six months UNLESS your talking signature series which has no clearly defined time table. I've also done a few other tiers with the same result, way over. Even 2 fast track moderns,12 books and 17 books took 29 and 25 business days not bad but still not "on time"as posted. I am documenting all of this because I do plan to take action so when you do talk about your submissions Please,Please,Please try to remember to say which tier and exact dates from at least received to shipped. Graded to shipped helps too. I had one 30 value go from verified to graded,no scheduled, and my latest magazine submission spent less than three weeks received and over three weeks scheduled for grading.Different routes for different tiers I guess. So as much as paying all up front is illegal in most businesses and highly unethical in all, it's still only my second mission, the first being getting the published estimate times changed to a more realistic number. In closing do you thing we can get more than two of us to agree on a course of action as well as a united front in actually dealing with this common problem? Hey, I'm a glass is half full kind of guy and all this love in the last few journals could be a start! I have spoken...'nuff said...and commence with the insults..Mcf

  5. dc, atlas, classic etc...

Finally got thru all the marvels i think, there could me more i havnt found yet in other boxes. At this point im going thru alot of dc,s, atlas, classics and others. Got myself an overstreet guide and have been looking at ebay to get an idea of what some of the comics are worth. I also stopped by a local comic shop and bought 100 backing boards and 100 mylites. The expence of the supplies was about $23.00, so i see that i am going to have to do this slowly if i am going to change out all the boards and bags. I figure the comics have been in there existing bags for at least 20 years. So for now i am still sorting the boxes.

By the way the comic book store was very interested in buying one of my hulk 181s.

I think eventually what i will do is sell everything and just concentrate on taking care of the marvel stuff and maybe filling in some gaps in the runs. Havnt really decided yet.

  6. St. Louis is the Gateway to the West.

Here is St. Louis, I live in the shadow of the Arch. I call it the Arch. Others call the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial.

St. Louis has a thriving collecting community, including a group of collectors who have been meeting bi-monthly for (almost?) 20 years. My apologies to SAGA member reading this as I don't have the historical stuff in front of me.

Recently, there have been a number of shops start operating in the area. St. Louis has numerous yearly comic shows and has been the site for one of the largest comic auctions ever.

Truly, as my friend Mike Phoenix writes, St. Louis is Comics' Second City. But we all have to live in the shadow of the Arch.

Why you will never win with a Dictator.

While thinking about the current state of comics and the future of my collection, I've decided to invest in high grade Silver Age books and get them certified. This is how I got here ...

I've been collecting for a long, long time and have amassed a huge collection. Mostly Flash, Fantastic Four but over the past few years, that's expanded to JLA, Amazing Spidey and the main Superman and Batman books, plus thousands of other books I haven't "collected" by going through back issue bins, but I managed to pick up along the way after reading comics for almost 30 years now. There's a couple of longboxes at my house, plus at least a dozen more at my parents' house.

I'm getting older and ready to start a family while looking around at all these books I've accumulated. I've decided to try and purge as much as I can and focus on a high end collection that's certified that allows me focus on books that will, in theory, retain significant value and hopefully appreciate in the years to come. Filling in the holes with random 90s Superman comics is probably not going to dramatically increase the value of the entire run that much. Buying a raw Near Mint Superman 233 and getting it certified would yield a better return and would be cheaper over the long haul than buying and maintaining the entire run of Adventures of Superman, as an example.

I've been thinking about this method all summer after DC announced their new 52 program. Although initially angry, it didn't take too long for me to realize that rebooting Action and Detective essentially freed me from the mentality of buying to continue "the run." Every other book I collect the run of has been rebooted at least once in their run, and The Flash has seen four restarts in five years. Now it just seems silly to me to show collector loyalty for books I enjoy less and less that take up space and rarely appreciate in value. Most depreciate, I suspect, but I'll find out soon enough as I try to unload many modern books.

I feel not only does this switch in collecting mentality allow me to focus on books that retain value and possibly appreciate over time like a good share of stock, but also appreciate the art form of comics. I love the Silver Age art of Kirby, Romita, Ditko, Infantino and others, and I believe I will really enjoy framing those amazing covers in CGC cases. Even some Bronze, Copper and Modern classics would look good in those cases.

Over the next few weeks, I'm going to pull all my Silver Age books and check out which ones will be suitable for grading, and then start working on selling all the rest. There's a few books I'm going to hang onto, notably the entire Wally West Flash series (I'm pretty proud of that run), but as far as I'm concerned, all the good stuff like Byrne's FF run is all available in trade so there's not much to miss with the old collection.

With comics collecting, I feel making the change is the first step. Joining up with CGC is the second, and I'm looking forward to continuing the journey here.

  9. CGC has not added mine but I have others listed

I have stated before that in the mid 80's I bought several comics from Mile High Comics that came in a special Mylar sleeve w/certificate claiming a Mile High 2 collection/find. I just sent my third MH2 book in for grading this time without the certificate because the two previous times it was just returned with the graded comic and notification of a MH2 pedigree not on the label. I assumed from the return and lack of notation that MH2 was not an approved pedigree.

Wasn't I surprised when on a recent hunt of CGC comics on Ebay that I saw a MH2 notice on the label of a Rawhide Kid comic that was graded in August of 2003.

Did something change in pedigree status since 2003? Is there an added fee that I am unaware of?

I know that the certificate will not be encapsulated but since I have 15 more books from this collection/find of the mid 80's if it could be noted on the label I sure would like to see that

High Grade is the way to go!!!

Recently while searching for comics on E-Bay, I found a seller that was auctioning off a fairly decent size collection. But, with a starting price that most people would not really care to pay, I made some inquiries to the buyer. As it turned out, he had about 1300 books ranging from 1964 to 1983. He and his brother bought the books right off the racks and put most of them away. After some conversations back and forth, I decided to go ahead and purchase them. LET ME TELL YOU, I was totally impressed with the amount and condition of the books. After sending some off to CGC I know why. Amazaing Spider-Man 22 CGC 9.6 White pages, Fantastic Four 112 CGC 8.5 White pages and Amazing Spider-Man 129 CGC 8.5 White pages. There is just an enormous amount of high grade books in this collection. I will be sending most of them off to CGC and building quite a nice group of books. To all those collectors out there, even the most obscure collections sometimes have the best books around. That is about it for now, I will be updating this offen with more spectacular additions.

  10. WTF is a teaser?

Like a few people I've seen here, my collecting focus follows a visual theme, underwater covers. I've never really liked being underwater, especially dark water. For some reason the thought of something attacking me from below is just the most unbearable and terrifying thought ever. I've also convinced myself that sharks could be anywhere.

When I started picking up comics I just bought stuff I wanted to read, mostly late SA/early BA horror, romance, and gothic romance(cause they make me laugh). I noticed that the underwater covers I randomly stumbled upon really grabbed hold of me. I started actively looking and realized that this was it. This is what I need to collect. I have just over 100 right now. I'm planning on slowing down the purchased a bit to ensure that I pick up books that fit, that I want to own, and that present well.

I'm making this journal mostly for me as a visual record of what I have and how it fits into my focus. Hopefully I can present some interesting books in a way that people don't see very often.

For now, I'll just post a few books to show the range of what I think fits in my focus.

    You threw away my comics?

When I lived in New Jersey one of my favorite past times was collecting comics. My store of choice was Collectors Comic Shop in the Bergen Mall. The owner of the store was the nicest man, who took the time to talk to my buddies and me about comics. His name was Frank.

Every so often when the ?crew? and me showed up sniffing around his shop, (a nice but tight shop in the dregs of Bergen Mall) He would always give us a heads up on comics he knew would be special.

My formula was very simple, buy several copies, read one Bag and tag the others. Bagging and tagging was always an OCD thing with me. I would ever take a book and squeeze out the air (yeah, I was a kid ok) then a strip or two of tape on the flap. Then into the box where they all sat straight and perfect. Not too tight, not too lose. Simple right. Well this is exactly what I did for years.

Well as time passed I got older and of course attention faded on the comic front. I joined the military and off I went. Of course I did not take my precious books with me.

I left them home in the loving arms of my folks. Years passed and then it hit me. My folks had moved several times already.... what happened to my comics"?

And so starts the saga of love and loss.

"Comics?" ... says my dad, in his perplexed tone that sent shivers up my spine ... I don't remember any comics.

You took those with you" he says as my stomach collapses in on itself. "Dad!" what would I do with all those comics?"

He shrugs as all dads do, when whatever you say gets written off.

Damn... and there we were... all gone. I made sure to put a little extra cammo paint on that day... Marines don't cry, right....

Sigh, that was well over 20 years ago.... but when I remember my comics it is still with me. Like a piece of shrapnel that the doc, just could not get out. PTSD over my own comics? damn.

So why am I here, why did I join? Well one night over dinner my wife and folks are talking about this and that, winding down for the evening (you know the drill) It?s at this time that my Dad seemed to have lost his mind.

"Are you still collecting comics?" he says.... Um... no Dad. (I kept it short, since that wound never healed, you know)

"Really? huh, that?s too bad" he says "You DO know, we still have all your comics right?

At that moment you probably would have gotten more out of me if you gave me an abacus. ?What?? I said.

"Yeah, let me go get them" he says. I sat there wondering what the hell was going on, when he starts bringing in box after box.

Yep, there they were. Yellowing, faded, boxes, but still holding strong. I dreaded looking inside. As I touched the lid slowly lifting it, I have expected seeing a rats nest made out of my precious comics.

Up and off the lid went. My heart raced and there they were, untouched inside. Just like I left em long ago. A long sigh?. PTSD fading?. Damn.

So. I'm here today catching up. Still trying to organize them before submitting them.

    Thanks Dad.

  11. Will Archie become the longest running title ever

I'm a goldenage M L J collector. I like M L J because they have the most violent super heroes: The Comet; The Hangman; Black Hood. And the hottest girls: Betty & Veronica; Suzie. And the funniest guys: Archie & Jughead. The only current comics I buy are Archie titles so I really don't have a lot to look forward to on wedensdays. Usualy I get one new comic a week. There are only six current Archie series titles.

I have a box at Things From Another World and they have a monthly news letter. What I read in it today blew my mind. I just read that D.C. will be renumbering all their comics. Do you know what this means to me? I'll tell you.

Out of the three titles that have survived since the goldenage: Detective; Batman; Archie ( Action stopped in '86 & started again in '87). Archie is set to stand alone as the only comic that has survived since it's inception in the 1940's.

This is a great day for me. I never thought in my wildest dreams that D.C. would reboot Detective Comics. To be honest I think it's scacrilage. I didn't have a problem with Archie being second to Batman. That's pretty good company to be in. But I'll take it. As of 9/7/2011 Archie will be the sole survivor of the goldenage of comic books.

Archie is now poised to be the only comic in the history of the world to have honestly earned it's 1000th issue. This is a glorious day for this M L J fanboy.

All I can do now is pray. Pray that the folks at Archie comics don't do anything stupid like rebooting Archie and pray I live long enough to buy Archie 1000 from my local comic shop.

If my calculations are correct it should be somewhere around the year 2042. I will be 74.

  12. "They Call Me Mr. Fixit" - Issues #324-379

A little more than a year ago, I set out to get CGC 9.8 copies of Incredible Hulk issues 324-379. (All issues in the series with the Gray Hulk)

I am pleased to announce that with the help of RockMyAmadeus, I now have the last two issues I needed. (#343 and #369)

If you get a chance, go check out the set in the registry, with scans and descriptions -

New baby, books at CGC for 65 "business days", and not a lot of sleep because I'm worried about both.

I have been collecting comics for a little over 20 years now. I can't get over how things have changed in the industry. Will it collapse, will the movies coming out help stabilize it...will people actually stop writing about these subjects.

I just had a new baby girl. She is exactly a month old as I write this. She is more precious to me then my collection...and that's saying a lot. I have been tossing up the idea to sell my collection for the past 9 months or so because of my daughter and for the fear placed on me by the industry. 65 days ago I decided that I wanted to keep my collection and that I should send in my third personal CGC submission. I have purchased other graded books over the past few years on eBay but haven't submitted a lot myself due to being in Canada (expensive shipping). I went to a very very weak comic convention in Toronto in March 2011 and decided to bring 6 books to get graded. I only ended up getting 4 done as I purchased a few commissions from artists while I was there and ran out of money (and credit). I had to submit them as they didn't have the on-site grading service there. They finally came in today and I was happy with all but one. Oh well, they found something I must have missed. It took 65 business days to get them though and I paid for the 40 day service. That's just too long. Plus I paid $60 to ship them to me which is $40 more then it cost me to ship it a year ago. Ouch!

I digress, I just wanted to say that I will be collecting comics til the day I die and I know the industry will last a lot longer then that. I will be introducing my love for comics to the new addition to my family when she is ready. And I will try to find a creative way to peak her interest. If anyone has any ideas on how to do that, especially a female opinion, I would appreciate the input.

    Happy collecting!

War comics thrilled me as a kid, and what boy wouldn't get excited about "Kerrang!", "Blaaam!", and "Aaaargh!"?

I really can't say when I got my first books, but it could have been either The Pink Panther (1971) #10, or Uncle Scrooge (1962), or Richie Rich (1960), and even the darkly Ghost Rider (1973) and the slightly mob-tastic Marvel Team-Up #39 (Nov '75). But it wasn't until that fateful day in March (or thereabouts) in 1977, and the grocery store on the side of town where my Grandmother lived, did I see, and beg for, issue #200 of G.I. Combat. With that issue, and the next month's, I was in nirvana. Though I gave away #200, I kept #201, and then eventually bought a replacement for my growing G.I. Combat collection. It wasn't so much about the war, as it was about the heroism, humanity, and the soul of the art. Kubert's covers are still the best, in my eye.

    Another Amazing Spider-Man Collector

It seems every other collector is after a run of ASM. I can see why: while the cost of the first 20 or so books is rather high, Amazing Spider Man has to be the most 'do-able' or approachable run of a major comic book character. I mean, you can just forget about Batman or Superman. And I don't know if the Hulk or even characters like Wolverine have the same gravitas as Spider-Man.

That said, I've often thought what if I'd really decided to be cost efficient and go after the perfect combination of affordability vs name recognition. When I think about collecting in that way, I usually come away thinking I'd have been better off trying to collect the Fantastic Four, or maybe even DC's The Flash.

    What do you think?

As I've gone towards my goal of collecting an entire run of ASM, I've included a far more approachable subgoal: collecting (and in the case of significant books, slabbing) every Black Cat cover appearance. Here's one of the few slabbed copies of her recent mini series.

Can comics be re-graded doing this?

If i had an old blue CGC label and wanted to pay to have it reslabbed to get the "new improved" blue label is there a chance of getting a lower grade by whomever does it?

  13. Actual time for a 40 day turn around.

Wow, after 59 (business) days, I finally have scheduled for grading in my status for 3 lots of my books I submitted back on March 28th. When I called to inquire about the delay they said they are running aprox. 2 weeks or 10 business days behind schedule. But, out of all that is bad in waiting for my books to be graded, there is a silver lining.

I recently submitted 2 higher end silver age comics to be signed by Stan Lee back in March of this year. One being a excellent copy of FF#1 it was a 7.5 graded before the signature and my gamble paid off and it kept it's grade of 7.5.

The second book surprised me a bit more than the the FF keeping it's grade,as it was submitted as a 5.5 purple label book with slight color touch. It was a Avengers #4 and my father had it signed by Jack Kirby on the inside cover back in the mid 80's. Sadly CGC will not cert. the signature since they were not in business back in the 80's and have to visually see the person sign the book to get the yellow label. But, I thought it would be cool to have Stan sign this book as well. When I went to pick the book up at CGC in Sarasota, the restoration grade was dropped completely, and I now have a complete yellow label (no purple at all), with a note stating Jack Kirby writing on 1st page. I never changed anything to the book, and submitted the book in the purple case that it was originally issued to me the 1st time I had it submitted. Just a question does this happen alot? Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this? Interesting story and well worth the waiting game if so.....
