  1. Attempt in saving an Amazing Spider-man issue.

Last week or so I purchase a cover-less issue of Amazing Spider-man 3 (1st Doc OCt). and before I sent it to get CGC I had a repro cover (inside and out / front and back) attached to said issue. Just curious to see if anyone has done this and what did CGC decided on its' fate? Sorry I have no pic but will update journal upon its return from CGC

  2. A few of my Asm's

I always love to upgrade my comics. I am trying to complete the first 50 Amazing Spider-Man comics in a 7.0-9.2 condition exception of the AF15 & ASM1 way too expensive for me. The highest grades Id want for an AF15 is a 4.0 and a ASM1 at a 6.0. I really don't even mind the page quality as long as these books do not have tan or brittle pages. Since these are slabbed I at least want a clean cover.

I first became interested in Silverage Spidey when I purchased an ASM 1 at a 1.5 from a show. I had never owned anything from the Silverage until then. I soon started to buy more Spideys but in really low grades. Ever since then I have upgraded all of them.

Example- I Upgraded my ASM 1 (1.5) to a 4.5 restored figured out restored books were not for me so I upgraded to a 3.0 you see in the picture.

I began to buy and upgrade every 6 months until I was able to achieve the better grades. The main problem is that the upgrades are getting expensive! The ASM 2 at a 6.5-7.0 runs for about $1400 to $1700. If I sell mine I can probably get about $650-750 for my book. Every book in this picture has been upgraded some up to 4 times. The next book I'd love to have in a 7.0 or higher is ASM14. I have had a hard time finding one at a 7.0-7.5. It seems everyone has an 8.0-8.5 for sale.

Either way this method is pretty fun and I keep myself occupied. Sometimes I get distracted and buy random slabbed comics just because I thought the book had a beutiful cover. Anyways thanks for reading.

    2000+ comics

I recently inherited a big comic collection and have been doing some research. Mostly 70-80's era but a few 60's era. Thinking about sending 6 or so to get graded...

so where exactly are we a few years into collecting

Well, a few years after getting back into collecting here is where we stand. maybe 11 or 12 long boxes of raw books, some 2100 slabbed books.

Complete runs of the following in 9.8

    Black Panther

    Red sonja

    Invaders (very tough at times)

    Nova

Howard the Duck (very tough at times)

Complete runs in 9.8 or 9.6

    Cat

    Nick Fury (tough one)

    Ms. Marvel

    Submariner (tough one)

    partial series runs complete

    X-men 94 - 143 - all in 9.8 except for 94

Swamp Thing 1-24 all in 9.8 except for issue 19

Current Runs I am working on actively

Captain America 100-200 in 9.8 - only 27 more issues to go in 9.8 (!)

Spidey Super Stories in 9.6 and 9.8 - only 12 more books to go

Werewolf by Night in 9.8 (16 books to go) (Ok the GS books are not all 9.8, I know, and neither is 32)

My top 3 books I own (this week)?

thats really hard: All Negro Comics, Phantom Lady 17, Planet Comics 71

My Favorites that I own in general in no particular order:

Showcase 22, Showcase 45, Military 1, Ms Fury 1, Thunda 1, Famous funnies 1, Plastic Man 1, Four Color 74, My Run of Nick Furys as a whole, Real Life 3, Strange Adventures 99, Single Series 20, House of Secrets 92, Conan 1, Freak Brothers 1

Books I would most like to Own: Pogo Possum, 1, Katy Keene 1, Wonder Woman 1, Whiz 1, Hit Comics 1, Flash Comics 1

Books I would most like to upgrade: Planet comics 1, Crime Does not Pay 22, Our Army at War 81, Crime Suspenstories 22

What do I think about doing the most - delisting the books from the registry, seriously if it was not such a good way of keeping track of stuff then I would like to do that. I may delist the books I have complete runs of; something to think about.

In many ways the registry is silly but its also fun. However when you meet some of the guys out there with huge collections that do not use it, you realize how wacked the 'rankings' are.

    ASM 300 McFarlane signing

Well, sent off my first SS submission to Desert Winds for the McFarlane signing. It was a ASM 300 that I bought off of the rack....wish I would have bought more of them, but as a teenager money was tight and investment was not my top priority.

Got out of the comics scene at the beginning of the 90's like so many people did. Toted these long boxes everywhere I went for the next 20 years or so. Got back into comics just a couple years ago, largely due to CGC. I love what they have done for the industry. I think if CGC had been around when I quit collecting I may not have quit at all.

Anyway back to the topic at hand. Because I really didn't pay much mind to the comics within the boxes all these years. The ASM 300 suffered some slight spine stress as a result. This is the main reason I never submitted it for a Universal slab, even though it would have been worth it.

I decided at the last minute to send it off as my first SS submission. Literally about 10 days before the books were due. A fellow boardie gave me an express pressing to help out with the spine stress it had suffered and off it went to Desert Winds. I'm hoping for a 9.4 when it comes back, and I really don't think it would be a surprise if it scores as such.

I've got the SS bug now so I recently sent the ASM 298,299 and 301 off for a pressing as well and with the white covers I expect excellent results. These I will be hanging onto for the next Todd McFarlane signing that comes along.

Most of the signed comics I want to get graded.

Detective Comics 669 sign by Chuck Dixan & Nolan #335/5000

Superman 82 (reg cover)signed by Dan Jurgens & Brett Breeding

My?Tery Society #1 (Hastings version) Signed by Steven Niles

  5. It is all by preference..really!

To make a long story short...pedigree is nothing more than having a history behind your comic book. You know who had it before you. Otherwise the book goes from manufacturer to book stand to who knows who until it winds up being sold at auction, yard sale or anywhere else.

We personally like pedigrees due to the fact not many have owned them before us and we know where they come from. We like file copies most of all because they have never left the publisher. Currently we have many slabbed file copies and a few unslabbed file copies. Also have some slabbed and unslabbed pedigrees.

The Col. became extremely excited last year on Superbowl Sunday when we got our first two pedigrees slabbed and our first two file copies slabbed....you would have thought he won a really big lottery purse!! So of course he will be watching for deals tomorrow night.

So to all you die hard football fans keep your eye on the game tomorrow and don't worry about buying comic books...we are ready for some really good deals again

Thanks for reading and happy hunting!

  6. If you love something let it go.

So 2011 is going to be a long year! I have decided to sell off all my books, save the Detectives. My big goal is to 1. Create more space in my home. 2. Raise a large chunk of change for a nice downpayment. I used to sell at shows and have a good portion of inventory left, and I also have my old collection which frankly I want gone. The har part is finidng time to sell, and the right method to sell. Should I do bulk lots, individual books, etc.. Many books will be graded by CGC, and the lower grades are going to fund grading fees. Either way, it should be an interesting year for me. I have transitioned from collector, to dealer, to collector/dealer. And now I just have to say goodbye to the collector aspect until next year. Oh, well thats my thoughts today.

    Avengers Assemble

Rather odd that my first journal entry has to do with passing 10,000 points, but I guess I lagged in posting journals. I just received a pack of 30 graded Avengers issues from the Silver Age and that put me over the 10,000 mark. The Avengers have always been my favorite Marvel series. I finished getting all the issues of the original series a few years ago and began submitting them to CGC a few months ago. The first one, appropriately, had been Avengers #1, which I submitted for a Stan Lee signing back in October of last year.

I did receive a shock with the latest batch I submitted, however. One of the issues, #54, I just figured would be in the same VF 8.0-9.0 range as the other issues surrounding it, but to my unpleasant surprise it was graded 1.5 with BRITTLE Pages! How did I miss that? Is it some gross error? Am I going mad? It was a setback, that's fer sure. Has this happened to others around here? I understand being off by 0.5 grading points or even 1.0 point as to a book grading not meeting expectations, but this was totally off the wall.

At this point, since the book is sealed, I'd have to open up the case to check this out personally. I suppose that would entail calling CGC for instructions... some things need avenging...! Avengers Assemble! (or not)

  8. A grand on slabbed books since Christmas may have me sleeping outside!!

I am sure that many of my fellow collectors have been in the same spot at various dollar amounts! While I am VERY happy with all of my recent slabbed purchases I DO have to slow down a little if ONLY to bank some extra cash! I have one kid in college and lately with this hobby it's like having TWO :)

    The HAWKMAN Mythos

?A hero ventures forth from the world of common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from this mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow man.? -- Joseph Campbell. The Hero with a Thousand Faces.

Although Gardner Fox created the Hawkman ten years before Joseph Campbell?s book was released, of all the super-hero characters of the Golden Age of Comics, the Hawkman is perhaps the best representation of Joseph Campbell?s hero. Within this journal, I would like to share my Flash Comics reading experience and try to better understand the Hawkman mythos.

    Flash Comics #1:

    a>

I can?t help but think that the character of Carter Hall must have been self-reflective. With war in Europe started in the autumn of 1939, he must have wrestled with a sense of helplessness in a world that is on a destructive course. A collector of exotic curios of the ancient world, frequent guest at socialite galas, he is ready to embark on a hero?s journey that will change his life forever.

    a>

I particularly like how Gardner Fox handles the mythological aspects of the story of the Hawkman origin. Making an Egyptian god blonde is right. The blending of different gods and goddesses further creates an American folk hero.

    a>

    The ninth metal!

    a>

    a>

Quarterstaff, wings, hood, crossbow; we are introduced to one of the Hawkman?s famous traits, the use of weapons of war.

    a>

    Death Count = 1

Wizard World and MegaCon, here I come!

SO much planning is going in to this convention season because, well, last year I just didn't plan at all, attending my very first comic convention, MegaCon, in Orlando, FL. Living so close, in Orlando, is definitely going to help out with the two I have planned out already. This year, I'll be first attending Wizard World in Miami in February and then MegaCon, and if everything works out, SDCC in July, though my girlfriend and I already have hotel reservations for Puerto Rico during that weekend (or doesn't work out, might be!).

Last year, I hastily through together some comics I wanted artists and writers to sign at MegaCon, and though I had some great covers graded with CGC, I had a lot of mishaps along the way too. I had TWO great covers of G.I. Joe #2B (2009), the Adam Hughes Baroness Virgin Variant Covers ruined because they must have got too hot and the crazy IDW film they put over top started coming up.... Anything that has to do with "Virgin," "Hughes," and "Baroness" has got my attention, and I loved those covers, still having both Hughes and Chuck Dixon sign one for me, but couldn't have it graded like I wanted to.

This year, I'm getting rid of all my issues processed through CGC before the convention season starts, that way I am only paying for Signature Series stuff at the conventions. On the final day of 2010, I signed up to be an Associate level member of the Collector's Society so that I can have my own submissions done online and get a discount on that too, so that helps a bit. The image below is a SMALL cutout of my Microsoft Excel comics spreadsheet that has the comics matched with those who will sign them, which ones I have and don't have, and which ones are good enough for CGC grading once signed. So far, not including a few Stan Lee signatures listed, I have 7 comics to get graded between the two upcoming conventions, and that's a good start. Before I heard about Stan Lee attending MegaCon, I was planning on burning up (not literally) all my blank sketch covers with commissioned sketches at WW Miami or MegaCon, but considering the costs to do sketches AND grading AND Stan Lee's 4+ signatures I'll be buying, that's gonna be a lot to handle all at once.... So I'll save them for a time where Stan Lee won't be the center of my focus, like next year, haha!

    Until next line............

    Very sad news.

I have known Jerry & Al Feldstein for a good few years. I sold Jerry a good deal of EC rare memorabilia over the years and also purchased a fair few of his books as well.

Always found him to be a true Pro.

Will miss you Jerry. The hobby is definitely the poorer now.

    God rest you.

  11. Grades are starting to come in...

...and so far the stats on the grades are like this:

    50 books submitted

    22 graded 9.8

    6 graded 9.6 (our pre-screen min.)

    5 more to be graded

So I had 33 of the 50 get graded, though I don't know the grade on 5 of them yet. I couldn't be happier so far. Hopefully I'll have a much bigger and even happier journal shortly.

  12. I volunteer at a thrift store and ran into a copy of Dark Horse Comics STAR WARS Dark Empire #1. I listed it on ebay for 5.99 and did not sell it but I'm glad I didn't because now I own a comic I can send in for grading when I upgrade my membership here.

This day has been weird because a series of events brought me here.

I'm a book collector foremost but dated a comic book collector years ago. Wednesdays were big days for him.

I went to see "Watchmen" with some of my comic book friends (I guess I was invited because I was a chick) and I read "Rant" under a suggestion from one of those friends. I had a crush on him for years but he finally married a nurse. We met in a Photoshop class at a technical college. I did a commercial with him, but I was dating someone when he was having bad luck with girls. That was what was going through my mind when I sat next to him during "Watchmen" during the gratuitous sex scene. My heart was pumping and by his awkward silence I only hope his was to. We haven't spoken since.

I however finished the book "Rant" that he suggested I read and my world has never been the same. I spend my days jotting down clues to pay attention.

So in general I have been a lurker but never past all the way through but I tell you this...you would be surprised what my room looks like right now for someone who is not a collector... it sure does look like a collector's paradise.

My fiance and I don't even have a bed because there is no room for one with the stack of books I have piled all over the place. It's cool when you don't have to search but stuff drops into your lap.

I have no idea what we have. So I'm here to learn how to do all this since it is obvious that it is consuming us.

One of the best wolverine books I've read in a LONG LONG TIME.

Wolverine: The Best There Is ..... This is NOT only one of the best Wolverine books Ive read in a while it is one of the best books PERIOD. So often i find myself at the Local comic book shop wendsday afternoon, looking down at yet another Wolverine One-Shot. "Oh ", I think "Not another one." For some reason though, I always flip through it to see what t he interior art looks like. When I picked this one up a couple weeks ago, those same thoughts ran through my mind. I opened up the book and thought, "why do I put myself through this?" When I saw the art my eyes lit up.....like that little boy on Christmas day getting his very first puppy, bb gun or bicycle. Like when we first encountered the joy of escaping into one of those newspaper print comics so many of us enjoyed....... Much to my surprise, I enjoyed this book cover to cover. Ryp's art has always enthralled me as a fellow artist and he doesn't disappoint in this one. Although this was the first book Ive read written by Houston, I THINK, he too did a bang up job of keeping my interest.

The book actually had a No Hero (avatar comics) vibe about it. After thoroughly examining each page I would flip hastily to the next only to bask once again in its Awesomness.

I don't know for sure but I believe this is the first book that Ryp has done for Marvel. And if it is, I cant believe it took Disney buying them in order to get him on board. To top it off, they have him working with a writer that fits his drawing talents PERFECTLY! I am eagerly awaiting the next issue of this one and I am finally EXCITED about a Wolverine book again!!!

Selling the Home (more like forced sale or else=forclosure ), Moving in with The Girl, Getting an Apartment together, and Looking over the Comic Books.

I believe I am nervous on all these issues, selling the home is a tough deal for me. My garage was my domain, wargame table, comics collection, figures both for display and give aways to my nieces and nephews. To leave the house is tough, my big job this week end is packing everything up. Selling off some comics and storing most away.

I have a substantial RAW collection averaging 30+ Long boxes from my previous 60 - 70 long boxes. I saved the best and as I look through them I develope a severe problem, I have a whopping two books graded you see, every time I go to select a book to send in I begin to read the books over again.

How am I going to accomplish what I need to get done if I get side tracked into reading.

The 60's through the late 70's were some great reading and the artwork was superb, and howabout the price, 12, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 cents for a book. Great stuff there. You just don't see that anymore.

I took a trip to the comic store and I bought all old stuff, I bought one book this week the John Carter Warlord of Mars $1.00 release. Now if the companies would consider that price for all their comics I believe our hobby would draw in new blood.

I just cannot seem to get myself together to put all this away and select a few to get graded.

  15. Why are you making me add a teaser?

One of these days I have to start putting together a set and get it up online. Lazy I guess. I just don't check in here very often. Two jobs and no money doesn't help either. lol!
