  1. Just a list for me to work on tallying up Ben Reilly appearances and deciding if there are more than one comic graded to qualify for being added as a Registry Set to determine if it can be requested. The goal after listing his known appearances will be adding the CGC Census information to make sure the entire set qualifies. 2. .. and how I view it.

I get a lot of grief for the way I collect. I buy a book, decide I don't want it, and sell it (usually at a loss) a week later. I do that often. I don't really pay attention to the people who criticize me for it. Your free to collect however you want, and so am I. I enjoy the way I collect, and that's all that really matters. It ( the grief) has however, made me pause and think about what I collect, and have collected. When I first started collecting (1990) my grail of grails was "Sleepwalker 1", I had Tons of Predator books, Silver Surfer v3, and McFarlane ASM, but that Sleepwalker 1 always eluded me. My neighbor at the time had a copy of Sleepwalker 1, and we all stared at it like it was a copy of Detective comics 27. For years, I searched for a copy to no avail. I was 7 years old living in New York, so my searching capabilities were limited. To This day, I covet Sleepwalker 1(I have it now) as a personal grail.

Fast forward to today. I'm 28 living in Arizona, and the books I coveted as a child are the books I refuse to sell. My Sleepwalker 1,Predator 1-4, Batman Vs Predator, Silver Surfer v3 #50 and Amazing Spider-Man 375, are all coveted books to me.

When I became a "serious" collector Hulk became my focal point, with 340 being my grail. Eventually I would find a copy for $100. It was around Fine, I bought it for $85. and for years I would overpay for crappy books. Around 2002, I was an "adult", I understood the value of a dollar, and changed my collecting habits. I started working on ASM 1-100 Hulk 1-6 X-men 1-66. I got bored with X-men quickly, ASM wouldn't be far behind, but Hulk... Hulk eluded me. In all my years of Comic Shop hopping I hadn't seen many old Hulks. Hulk 1 became my grail.

What drives me as a Collector..? Nostalgia. Hulk 1-6 became a goal that I hadn't achieved until 2010. In 2010 in the span of a week I was able to purchase Hulk 1-6. Over the course of the next 6 months I would obtain 3 more Hulk # 1s. But I started collecting FF, and I sold all the Hulks. I quickly began to miss having Hulk 1. Prices were going up, and they were getting harder to find. Before Long FF would bore me, and I would got to TOS. 39 quickly became a favorite book of mine. for the next year, I would buy and sell, keeping very little for longer then 3 months. I upgraded my Tos 39, and started building that run before deciding I didn't really like it. Hulk was where I wanted to be. I sold off my TOS run (excluding 39) and started searching for another Hulk 1. I was able to find and purchase a 4.5. Again I find myself working on Hulk 1-6 and now TTA 59-101. But I' thoroughly enjoying it. I fully intend to sell my Hulk 1 (hopefully, sooner than later) to fund an Upgrade. But for right now I'm thrilled with my current copy.

Throughout the 22 years I've been collecting, I have owned every major silver Key, and to me that holds a lot of value. Today I own quite a few Silver Keys, but none for the sake of having. I own and buy what I like, I sell what I'm bored with. That's how I'm wired. and It's How I most thoroughly enjoy this hobby. To my knowledge there is no mandatory time limit I need to own a book before I sell it. I own it, It's mine, I'll do with it what I want. I've had sellers get angry at me for not keeping the book they sold me long enough and you know what? I'm ok with that.

    9.0 on a definite 9.4-9.6 copy

I submitted a JLA #7 which was a sure 9.4 or above. Nice corners flat glossy clean and tight! It is really a beautiful representation of this comic! I saw when it was finally graded it was 9.0. I paused and my heart was broken, I called the office and asked them for the grading notes and they said the only thing they found was the 3 tiny creases which are barley noticeable on the bottom left corner (see the picture)! This is ridiculous!! That flaw was the only reason why it was a 9.0, I have seen books that look worse than this that get 9.4's even 9.6's!! CGC is bias and only looks to benefit itself and the companies it works with. I shake my head in disgust at the level of consideration for people who are just regular comic book collectors and how unfairly they are treated compared to the people who make money for CGC.

  3. Its been awhile. I decided to get some books I have and add them to try and bring my registry score up.

I was trying to get over 20,000. Thats not very many points. Had to enter about 100 books. The one that put me over (barely) was a comic that I've always wanted. Just got this copy a few years ago (nov 2009) for $61.

  4. Now that the new carpet has been installed in the basement, it's time to set up the Comic "Room"

Greetings! And welcome to my first in a series of Journal entries chronicling my adventure setting my basement up into a comic room.

I've got more room than I really know what to do with, and not nearly enough comics and stuff to fill it out. Luckily, I do have other nerdy things to help fill out the space.

I'd like to also take this opportunity to thank everyone that has participated in the "Got a comic room??? Showcase it here!" thread. I've stolen quite a few amazing ideas from you guys.

Pictures of the space will be posted in the next couple days.

Thanks for coming along for the ride!

Note: Sorry for the re-posting; I've been having issue with the Journal posting to Forum functionality.

My thoughts on one of the better but maybe less known artists from the 70s.

Although, I was not born until 73 and alot of Kalutas seminal work, outside of Star Struck, seems to have occurred in the 70s, I find that he is an artist that ranks somewhere in my top five artists. Maybe number one even. I think for me the top five artists in no particular order include Neal Adams, Bernie Wrightson, Michael Kaluta, Todd McFarlane, and Charles Vess. Honorable mentions, for me of course, go to Alan Davis, Milo Manara, Humberto Ramos, Nic Cardy, Dave Stevens, maybe Sam Keith during his Sandman run but not so much afterwards and a few others.

I think the work that did it for me was the Vampirella, Morning in America book that came out in early 91. I was 17 at the time and that cover absolutely captivated me despite the work that was currently being put out by the likes of Lee, McFarlane, Portacio and even Liefeld (although in my defense I think it was the McFarlane inks over the top of his pencils that really attracted me on some of the covers).

The book depicts Vampirella standing in a circle of smoking candles placed in skulls fashioned as candle holders. The depiction of vampirella is beautiful and now that I have seen his depictions of Madam Xanadu and the hostess from Forbidden Tales of Dark Mansion I see some similiarities. Plus, she has the awesome J-Lo trunk going on before it was really appealing. :) Anyway there are various other occult creatures and paraphernalia surrounding her and Kaluta makes effective use, IMHO, of all available space. It is just a really beautiful cover to me and has stayed with me for I guess a couple of decades now. :( While the story and internal art are unmemorable for me that cover is one of my favorites. I really wish he could have done the inside but I understand the amount of time it takes to finish the work.

A few years after, Kaluta worked on the covers for the Vertigo series, Books of Magic. That is one series that I followed from about issue 19 all the way to the end somewhere in the 60s, I think. But I found many of those covers beautiful as well, again despite the stuff that Jim Lee and other image artists were doing at the time.

Now as an older adult, I have discovered his covers on House of Mystery, Doorway into Nightmare, his work on the Shadow series and others from the seventies which are just as beautiful to me. Anyway, I plan on posting images of Kaluta covers here as I find and acquire them here. Thanks for reading.

    Old Coupon

It took me 11 months to find the 3 comics (last years coupon) to send in for grading. I ended up with 3 keys. Amazing Spider-Man 39, 40, and 50. I wonder how long it will take. My coupon is 3 comics any value in 20 days. The new one is 4 comics with a $1000 value limit, but only 15 days. The old coupon tier doesn't exists anymore. Depending on how these come back plus the grading time will determine if I continue to trust CGC and their grading system.

    What I hope for:

    ASM 39 8.5 or 9.0

    ASM 40 7.0 or 7.5

    ASM 50 8.0 or 8.5

It only takes 1/2 grade on ASM 50 to either increase or decrease value of $100 or more.

    I can't wait!!!! It's been 9 days and counting.

I just realized that my overall ranking after adding my last book ended up at 666.

I just realized that my overall ranking after adding my last book ended up at 666. I have 30+ submissions in right now and I'm a little concerned the bad luck will effect my upcoming grades. lol

Anyone have any superstitions or rituals that you believe will effect your grades? For example; swapping out for fresh bags & boards before sending your books in hoping that in some magical way it will effect the grade. Sounds goofy, but I have a friend who actually does that.

Anyway, I hope I don't get back all 6.0's. lol

Just got my coupon for signing up and I just packed my first submissions.

So I got my first submission all ready to go. These are more for my personal collection than anything but I have high hopes for their grades. These are what I sent in.

1: Haunt #1, 1:100 Sketch cover by Todd McFarlane. Signed by McFarlane, Capullo, and Kirkman. The book has only been out of the sealed bag once to be signed by the guys. This is a personal item and I won't sell it but I still think it will get a high 9 (9.7-9.9). I picked it up from the McFarlane store in Glendale, AZ for $30 the day of release.

2: Haunt #1, Gold foil limited print (5,000 made). Never been out of the bag ever. Again purchased at the McFarlane store for $25. I also think this will get a high 9.

3: Vengeance of Bane #1, first print. Never opened. I got this when it came out and I bought two of them. One I opened a read once, this one came bagged and boarded. Never once did I break the tape. Again, shooting for a High 9. I think (hope really) the value will rise with the release of "The Dark Knight Rises." If it looks that way then I might send in all of Knightfall.

4: Green Lantern #33 (Series 2, 1963). Again, another personal piece. I inherited #32-50 from my Father. He was a collector as well and this was read once and bagged. I hope for a mid to high 9, but realistically I see it getting an 8.5ish.

I hope it all goes well. :)

  7. With volume 5 of Captain America in the books as a "contained" volume, this set has every book, printing and variant in the series.

My revised and final set description:

From 2005 to 2011, Captain America has been under the helm of writer Ed Brubaker. During that time, the series has earned numerous awards and truly brought Captain America into the modern era for today's readers. The journey of Captain America during this time is a long and wide spanning story that brought back Bucky, 'killed' Cap, have a new Cap, bring back Cap and even manage to end with a sense of urgency for what lies ahead. Outside the comics, Captain America gained renewed interest thanks to the controversy it caused, from bringing back a character whose death was originally "sacred" to "killing" the title character, and giving a new Cap a new costume. It was in 2011 when the co-creator of Captain America, Joe Simon passed away. It was fortunate that he could see the character rise to new levels of popularity and see the creation of a successful feature film. Please enjoy checking out what is in my opinion, the best run in years.

In putting this run together, I have been extremely lucky and I'm very grateful to a lot of people. They know who they are, and I say Thank You. This collection simply could not be what it is without having had a lot of help in putting in together from fellow enthusiasts and collectors to CGC Signature Series witnesses and staff.

A majority of this collection is graded under the Signature Series label, and another BIG thanks goes out to all the various creators who were willing to sign my books, allowing my collection of this series to be a true one of a kind. Signatures throughout the series include: Ed Brubaker, Steve Epting, Michael Lark, Mike Perkins, Butch Guice, Marko Djurdevic, Frank D'armata, Alex Ross, Stan Lee, Joe Simon, and others. I've been very fortunate to have met many of the people who have worked on the book too and I have to thank them for chatting with me, signing my many books and in some cases, sketching for me too!

To date, I have managed to acquire three 9.9 graded books as well as three 9.6s. When starting this set, I originally wanted strict 9.8s and for a long time I was able to maintain it. When it came down to it, I would rather have a 9.6 in my collection than not have the book at all, and in the case of my 9.6s, I will "settle" for them until a 9.8 surfaces for those books - if ever.

I've taken the opportunity to use the back cover image slot to showcase various parts of my Cap collection which have relevance to the particular issue. This ranges from issues which I have managed to have signed by contributors, to wraparound cover art, sketches or other CGC graded books or instances where the back cover is something other than an advertisement.

Please note that for a majority of the issues in my set, I have included descriptions of the issues as well as notes to most issues. There are SPOILERS throughout.

    Hi All,

Just received this in the mail from the Comic-Con folks. There is a very good article about Steve Ditko in the Annual. Not sure if they are sending to everyone on their mailing list or those that have signed up for the new Member ID but hope you received yours as well.

    Later,

    Malcolm

Searching for Signature series mostly Spider-man titles

    Hello everyone!

Once again I'm back for collecting all signature series especially Spider-man titles. Good time since Spider-man movie is just around the corner for this year 2012.

I was able to find quite numerous number of CGC signature series (will upload pictures on gallery) and especially "death of Gwen Stacy"--sorry it sound bad but hey that's how the real story ends. They mess things up looks like altering to different reality compare to the upcoming movie. The 1st-3 movies supposed to look good but it was at the wrong time of technology and actors as well. The story line also mess things up the way i see Peter Parker's real life compare to real story told in the comic book. Villains were also different in terms of who should be on that sequential time line and story line, but what can we do? at least they didn't mess things up really badly--it turns out ok for now.

Oh well, back to search for other signature cgc Spider-man titles.

    Nuff said.

    A CGC Graders Experiences

I am creating this journal to talk a little bit about my experience as a CGC Grader.

I can remember the 1st time I saw Silver Age keys back when I was 14 years old. The 1st time I saw an AF #15 it was at my LCS. I was in awe! It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. Sure, the copy was actually a 1.5, but to me it was perfection.

Through the years going to all the shows, especially San Diego, after having been around a while, I got use to seeing those types of books sitting on dealers walls all the time. It gets to the point where you just walk by them because it is nothing special to see anymore.

So after working at CGC for over 7 years, even seeing key issues becomes routine. For a good 4 years at CGC, I was the only pregrader to grade every single Standard, Express, Walk Through and Collector Society submission that came in to CGC, as well as every Golden Age Economy and Value Tier submission. It seemed like every other submission contained AF #15, ASM #1, #14, #50, #122 #129, IH #181, GS X-men #1...etc. Even grading and seeing Golden Age Keys were no big deal anymore. I believe Action Comics #1 was still the only book that still got me exciting, after all, it is still THE GRAIL of all grails!

I guess I miss that excitement I had as a kid, seeing all those books for the 1st time, dreaming of the day I could own and enjoy all those treasured books.

Thanks for reading my CGC journal entry! More to come...

Dude! Stop putting your info in these posts, anyone in the world can see your info. If you can't grasp this, I can see why you have trouble with CGC.

I'M SORRY FOR THE BIG LETTERS, AS I HAVE PROBLEMS WITH MY EYES, I JUST HAVE'NT FIGUREDE A WAY YET.

Lame excuse. Even with the old versions of Internet Explorer you can zoom the screen to 150%, 200%, 300%, etc. Plenty big for bad eyes,

THEY CAME BACK GRADED AT 8.0 8.5 9.0 DO NOT EVEN KNOW WHAT I CAN SELL THEM FOR.

You'd get more sympathy if you weren't trying to profit off them.

AS FAR AS THE 20 DAYS ESTIMATE I LOOKED ONLINE AND IT SAID IT WAS ON TIME, I FEEL THEY COULD HAVE CALLED,

Again, drugs are bad, You shouldn't do drugs, mmkay?

THE CHARGE FOR INSUREING THEM WAS PRICED TO HIGH,

No they weren't. And once again, the amount they are insured for does not reflect how much you pay to have books slabbed, unless it's for bumping you up a tier (a good thing!).

MY RESPONSIBILITY I DID PUT A QUESTION MARK WHERE IT ASKED WHAT I WANTED TO INSURE THEM FOR.

At least you're taking some responsibility.

YOU ASKED ME IF I WANTED IT ALL. I FEEL LIKE THIS. CGC IS TOP OF THE LINE INOVATION TO CONTINUE TO BE THE BEST HAS BEEN THERE BELIEFS. SO YES I DO BELIEVE A PHONE CALL WAS APPROPIATE ABOUT BEING LATE.

Why, so you can person_without_enough_empathy at them? Never gonna happen. Get over it.

I'M PAYING FOR THE BEST, I SHOULD BE TREATED LIKE IT.IF THEY DON'T WANT TO MAKE THE PHONE CALLS HIRE ANOTHER PERSON OR WORK LATE SO THEY ARE OUT ON TIME,

    You're an insufficiently_thoughtful_person.

OR CHANGE THE 20 DAYS SO THEY CAN GET IT DONE BY THEN, THE EASY WAY IS TO JUST PUT A REVOLVING NUMBER OF DAYS WHATEVER,

Whoa, you just had a decent idea there! BTW, it's never goona happen.

RAISE THE PRICE AND HIRE MORE PEOPLE, I AND ALL WILL PAY FOR THE BEST.

Yeah, right, yet you complain the charge for insuring them was too high?

WHEN THEY WERE STILL IN THE GRADING PHASE I SEEN HOW LOW THEY WERE GRADED. I CALLED AND ASKED IF I COULD STOP THE PACKAGING AT THIS TIME AND THE LADY TOLD ME NO I COULD NOT STOP IT. I FEEL I SHOULD BEABLE TOO HAVE THAT OPTION.

    No you shouldn't.

Can't wait for your next post!

  13. I THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENT. I AM SORRY FOR SAYING I DID NOT RECIEVE THE 3 COMICS I SENT TO CGC. I DID RECIEVE THE 3 COMICS A FAMILY MEMBER SENT TO CGC. MY APPOLIGIES TO CGC AND ALL WHO HAVE READ THAT. MY MISTAKE. ALL I HAD TO DO WAS TAKE MY TIME FOR 3 DAYS, AND I WOULD NOT HAVE CAUSED PAIN. KNOWING THIS IT IS MY FAULT, MY ACTIONS CREATED THIS. I AM MOVING ON NOW. THANK YOU SO FOR ALLOWING ME TO SAY ALL THIS...

I AM DEEPLY SORRY FOR THIS, IF THERE IS ANYTHING I CAN DO TO MAKE IT RIGHT, PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO CONTACT ME @ rdavis60@charter.net, 507.529.0710

    My first three

So i picked out three book out of boxes of comics

to get graded i brought them to the main office cause i was in the area at the time

but the three books i submitted are

Young Allies #10 (i got this for free as a gift and i think its going to be the highest out of the three)

World's Finest Comics #12 (also free the grade looked like 6.0)

Superman #6 (paid $15 bucks but i think its going to be the lowest cause some of the corner was missing and some chips off the page and it looked like a rubber band got stuck to it so im going to say its going to be a 3.0 around there)

my 10 silver books have moved into the "waiting to be graded" slot today. If it is like the last batch I sent in they will be in my hands before they are changed to the "shipped safe" category, The kids went back to school after 14 straight days at home, the sun is shinning, life is good in Texas.

Hello 2012 you are going to rock.

    Tears of a clown

Why all the crying about $5? Like my old man used to say, I'll give you something to cry about. Cry about the horrible time frames we've had to deal with all year. Cry about the glib answer of "it's just an estimate" when you call customer service. Yes just an estimate, that you pay a different price for depending on which "estimate" you choose. I'll pay $5 CGC, I understand price hikes and service charges. I don't understand having system in place that does nothing but frustrates your customers with hopeful time frames for a fee that can't deliver. I don't understand an $8 option of fast track that does nothing. If CGC should learn anything this year, I hope it is to be more upfront and honest with their tiered pricing structure, perhaps even giving a free submission coupon to those customers who have had their time frames doubled. Something to show they get that they were late, not "following an estimate".

At 10 books a day, it will only take two years.

I have gone back and forth for a while about setting up a journal to document my graded collection of books. Sometimes it seems like a good idea, sometimes it feels like over-exposure. After spending the weekend scanning three boxes of books, I decided it seemed silly to go to all that effort for the files to just sit on my hard drive and collect e-dust. So I have decided I would start this thing and try to post 10 books a day till I am out of books or out of scans, whichever comes first. I may throw a couple of other things in the mix every now and then. Feel free to comment or chat.
