Here is one comic a collector friend pulled out of a stack at a garage sale (he snagged 4 books in total for $30) last month...............

I call wildly_fanciful_statement. Spider-Man is an iconic, high-profile character whose appeal has been mainstream for at least 30 years. I find it hard to believe that even someone who knows nothing at all about comics or comic book subculture would look at a cover that says 'Introducing Spider-Man' and not question whether if it had any value outside of yard sale filler.

All depends where you are. The mess people throw away in the garbage where I live is insane. Then again, my town is split into two. One half is pelham(average 500k-700k homes and that's where I live) and the other half is the manor(2 mill and up homes). The mess the people in the manor throw away on bulk garbage nights is insane. I always go through the manor on my way to work when its bulk garbage that morning. You would be amazed at what people don't care about.

Maybe we should start a 'What have you found at the dump lately?' thread.

Seriously,I found a 1906 GE brass fan that still worked at the dump a couple of years ago.Sold it on ebay for $125.

One man's trash & all that.....

I picked up a crate of records one two diff occasions. One time it was LPs, nothing good. I gave them all away to good will. The second time was a bunch of 45s from the 50s. Gave them to my uncle for 1,500$. I know they were worth more since there was one record in there that booked for 8,000 but it was beat up pretty good.

If it weren't for Kimik himself posting this, I probably wouldn't believe the story either. Great great find!

4 for $30 means the seller thought they were worth "something"...maybe he looked it up in a 1970 OPG and came to that price?

or looked up amazing fantasy 15 and found the price on the one put out in the 2000s...

Definitely not wildly_fanciful_statement. My friend and his wife were out visiting her brother in Eastern Canada. He and the brother in-law decided to do a few day trip into the US hitting small towns looking for antiques and comics. They struck out there, but they got back into his brother in-law's hometown on Friday and decided to hit a few garage sales. They did not find anything until they hit one older couple's sale and he asked the question "Do you have any comics". The owner said sure and took him into the garage where there were 4 small piles of books in a couple of boxes. The first three piles were 50s Dells and low grade late 50s DCs, but he pulled out three from there that he needed. The last stack had the AF #15 near the top, he pulled it out and stopped looking there (I wonder what esle he missed lol ), then asked for a price for all 4. The owner asked what he thought they were worth, so my friend emptied his pockets and came up with $30 which the guy accepted. That is why it was an odd price, and why the brother in-law was going to follow up with the owner to see if there was anything else that they missed (this is why I will not disclose the location as some boardies might live there or nearby.........). Basically, the owner did not care about the comics and therefore took the first offer he got.

You never know what will turn up in garage sales, I guess. I know of a local collector/dealer that found a bunch of GA DCs at a garage sale a 4-5 years ago that included low grade Tec #36, 37, 38 and a few in the 40s, as well as a bunch of early Archies and Captain Marvels (wish I had bought the Archies now.....) . The copy of Tec #28 I bought from a local store came from a guy that was given it and another book (can't remember) by his grandfather, who had found them at a garbage dump.

Did your friend know the true value of the AF 15?

Oh well, despite what everyone here will say, if they were in the same position they would have done the same. Just like all of the boardies that chastised Chuck for the Mile High collection and saying they would have paid more, set up a scholarship in Church's name, etc., if they were in the same position they would have done the same thing.

My friend did know the value of the book and was thrilled as he did not expect to ever be able to buy a copy of AF #15 (he likes his books to be VF or better). I am happy for him on this find.

FWIW, I told my friend he made a mistake offering so much for just a few books as the owner might now take a look into the value of what is left. If it were me, I would have offered the owner $20 for both boxes of books after checking them all out and snagged everything.

I also teased him that if there was an AF #15 in that shape he might have missed out a Hulk #1 and FF #1 in similar condition by not looking through the rest of the last stack. lol

I believe this guy...5 months ago I bought B and B 28-29-30 JL 1-16 run plus atom 1 and bunch of early hm issue and The (beatles) bucher Album 2nd stage for 300.00 bucks...Young guy got all his father stuff when he passed away and didn't want it.

You have to ask and you have to get extremely lucky.

The guy asked what it was worth, not what he'd offer. Your friend definitely took advantage without question. Was he wrong to do so? Nope. People sell all kinds of things at garage sales. Sometimes they ask way too much, other times way too little. This is certainly an extreme example, but look at the dumpster diver from above -- thousands of dollars worth of records on the roadside? Who's to say these comics don't wind up in the trash one day.

Just hope they never find out what it's really worth and regret it.

Please don't lump me into your everyone category. I most certainly wouldn't lie or be deceitful to get a book. But that is just me. Sorry I have a conscience and like to look at myself in the mirror.
