Harbinger 1 has always been expensive, 9.8's were going for $300-$400 even before the announcement

+1

It's also the one Valiant key that I was never able to find growing up.

It seems like it's always been a tough book.

At least for me.

This is like the third time raw near mint Harbinger 1's shot past the $100 mark. I don't think there has been any other copper or modern book that performed like that in its history. The first time was in the early 90s when Valiant Comics were hot. The second time occurred when news of a 9.8 sold for $2500 spread like wildfire. And now when a movie investment has been announced.

Patently false. The week before the announcement 4-5 copies CGC 9.8 copies sat unsold at ~$325 Buy-It-Nows on eBay & at least one retailer site, while the CGC 9.6s sat unsold at $100 Buy-It-Nows but sold for about $78 at true auction (with the occasional $100 true auction for 9.6).

There's a world of difference between "sold for $300-$400 in 9.8" and "sat for months unsold at $325 BIN asking price in 9.8"

Exactly -- per GPA, those 10 recorded sales in 2014 averaged out to $337.

In 2015, there was a sale in Feb. at $339.

It's just disingenuous to say "sales of $300-$400 even before the announcement" when the average over 15 months & 11 recorded sales was consistent at $337. In my mind, $337 is a far cry from $350, let alone $400.

Likewise, considering that three weeks ago there were literally three copies sitting unsold at $325 BINs via eBay alone.

While one $325 sale shows up in GPA the day of the announcement, the others may not if they were sold via Lone Star, which often cross-posts books to their own site & eBay.

$337 is a far cry from $350? lol

Do you get mad if your kids make 96% on tests, too? :insane:

(... and how much do you think the average shipping was? I'd guess around $13.)

weren't harby 9.8s going for way more than $350-$400 a couple of years ago or was that just a blip and then a bunch got slabbed?

Depends on your definition of "way" more and "a couple" of years ago. :)

2008 and the front half of 2009 were insane.

A month before the announcement, I sent my Harbinger #1 NM+/MT copy into CGC with my coupon submission with the intent to sell it and try to get at least $200 for it if it came back 9.8. Now I think I will be holding on to it. It's amazing how quickly fortunes can change in the comic hobby these days.

I also still think it has one of the most iconic covers of the late Copper Age.

I should have told everyone that I was selling off my VALIANTs last year. 6 months or less, that's all it takes before the stuff I sell off skyrockets to new highs.
