Maybe this is a discussion which should have it's own thread, but look at how similar the Tec year 2 covers are to the Bats 423 cover below...

Yes, these are all eerily similar. Could be due to these being some of Mcfarlanes earliest covers? Wasn’t Tec 576 his first cover? At least his first with a major house like DC?

You're basically right. After getting his break doing the art on Coyote (Epic/Marvel imprint) & then Infinity Inc (DC), Batman: Year 2, Detective Comics 576, published in July 1987 was his first work on a major title/character. The Batman 423 cover was published in September 1988. I have a theory he might have drawn it back when he working on Year 2, but they decided not to use it then. From there he moved onto Hulk, then Spidey, and into comic superstardom :)

I have become intrigued by McFarlane and his work. Leading me to do quite a bit of reading on him. So, it looks like from my understanding that Coyote 13 was the first work he did on a cover with the Gypsy Rose portion of the cover in 1985. He did, to my understanding do some interior work on Coyote 11 though being his first published artwork.

He then went to D.C. where he did a pinup pull-out for Infinity Inc 13, and then got his first solo cover with Infinity Inc 14. After Infinity Inc he went on to do Detective 576 in 1987, which was his first major character cover. He finished the Detective “Year Two” series in late 87, and did Batman 423 in September 88. During 87 he also was working with Marvel and produced his 1st Hulk cover in April 1987 with IH # 330. In March of the following year he began work on ASM 298, and the rest as you said is history.
Is there not a McFarlane appreciation thread in the Copper forum? Seems like a drastic oversight.

Yeah, as a fan of his work, I've actually thought of doing a Todd McFarlane appreciation thread, but people might say he already gets enough recognition :)
