Hah.  Small world.  I set at the time I bought it a GPA high for an ASM 15 8.0, about 7 years ago. So I broke your then-chart-buster.  At the time, i thought it was nuts, and that it would take years to show equity in the book.  Now i regret not buying a 9.0 or higher of that book.

Don't know about the shadow but if the cover below was the first time Hulk was on a cover, I'd say it counts

The Rocky Mountain #1 would be WP.

The two Boston #1's, one was a genuine 9.8 WP, and the other copy was resubbed from a 9.6.   It's a W/OW pagers 9.8.

I've got more Northlands, and do I regard it as a pretty good pedigree, but you might have a point.    Externally, particularly back covers, they present very well.  

There is some weak books in the collection, and some staggering stellar books as well.

Overall, I found the older comics from the pedigree had better page preservation than the later Silver.

It's a scanner edge artifact, not a brown halo.

My comment remains, based on experience with the collection since Motor City brought it to market in the mid 1990s.  The material up to around 1965 was gorgeous.

Speaking of comics that made huge recent price gains, here's an awesome early Northland with a snowy white cover, if only ow/w page quality:

That's been my experience, too, with the post-1965 Marvels.  But the early stuff that I was fortunate to own was great.

I'm not much of a pedigree expert and I'm generally neutral on them when making purchase decisions ... but you freaked me out a little bit with this post so I went and found all my Northland copies.  Here's everything I got.

Right - and the sad thing about CGC is they seem to assign PQ in the dark.   Either that or PQ is Matt Murdock's assignment. 

You never know what is inside until you crack them out.  Trust me - I'm up to about 300 slabs cracked at this point.  I guess some good news is, sometimes they get it right...., I always enjoy cracking out those CROW books to find white or OW inside...,

While it's true that page quality grading has wobble, so too does the numerical grading.  Quite a bit, in fact.  Like many people who submit books to CGC, I took guesses with each submission as to how the comics would grade out numerically and for page quality.  Over the years, I was at least as good at guessing CGC page quality as the CGC structural grade.  And I doubt I'm the only one.

Most of the Northlands that I once owned were bought in the days before CGC out of the Motor City quarterly catalog.  A few others like the FF Annual 2 were cracked out of their old label slab, giving me a look at the interiors.  So while I completely agree with you that many Northland books from 1966 and later have unimpressive paper preservation, I really liked the look of the paper on the Marvels from 1965 and earlier.

Here's another, with bright paper and deep cover inks, and only a light color-breaking crease at the top edge of the front cover causing a downgrade.  Having bought the book raw, I can share that CGC's page quality designation appeared accurate to me:

Definitely on the cold side as it finished up at #7 in their Top 10 coldest comic books, but still better than some of the ones that dropped by 70% to 80% from their highs earlier this year.  I guess it's really no surprise how many of these seem to have jumped up in the first place due to movie or TV related hype, but now seeing the other side of the hill.  

Weren't these the same two guys who had videos earlier this year on how super hot comic books were and now they seem to be taking the opposite tack on the mood of the marketplace.  Not sure, but did the guy in glasses hurt himself or give himself a hernia while doing this video, with all of his gestures or was he simply trying his best to take off and fly.  Then again, it's good to see that he's certainly enthusiastic and all in when it comes to the subject matter in hand.
