It was 240K or full asking 245K , he  was very excited as he kept saying it shattered old record bla bla. For all we know they bought it and will relist again at 300K . Something seems off to me …….

Which was it? 240k or 245k?

Third print is almost identical to both 1 & 2 prints  and comparing Cgc blue to actual print run they are undervalued and much lower in census  . It’s 100% same book and nobody should try and spill milk on that fact . It’s BS I love mine and it’s same magazine size . I’ve owned first print as well def know the differences between them

Totally the same. Except for all the differences, coming out a year later, and having a print run ten times higher than the first.

Really like what huge differences? It’s first printed appearance clearly a third print just like second is second and not better than third ( being printed in 84 after the first print still makes it second print )  . I own 9.6 third love it . It’s over sized and looks great .

it has way less copies in census for its print run so 35000 printed yeah bigger but less than 1500 blue in there so it’s Uber low on rarity scale  . Anyways I love the growth long term for the third print as much as the other two and always group all three together because slabbed they look same .

Third print’s cover has a more “pink” tone than 1st and 2nd print’s more reddish tone. The printed ink on the interior is lighter in the third print. It doesn’t have the Gobbledygook ad. 3rd print is also sized slightly different. And of course, the “3rd print” on the inside front cover. Those are about the only differences.

I once had a “first print” which was actually a third print interior with a reproduced “1st print” cover (complete with Gobbledygook ad), and the interior ink quality was the telltale sign. Kudos to this very message board for helping me figure it out.

I think I prefer the print quality of the third print. It reads better to me. Nicer contrast in the inks/tones. Maybe that is just me. I will never own a first print :( I had a chance to buy one years ago and I let it go. I think about that a lot now. I have a couple copies of the second print which is the closest I will get. It looks like all copies of the first three printings of issue 1 are on the way up to the heavens! I am happy I own a copy and got this when it was affordable. Owning one now at current prices would be nothing more than a mirage for me!

I feel the same . Growing up where I was geographically these books were ghosts . Never saw them or even held a copy of any Tmnt book until I was at my cousins around 87 and he had copy of issue 7. The newsstands in Canada just didn’t carry them so having a few copies of the early books makes me smile . It does suck not having a first print but the oversized issues are all specialism any printing  imo. A moment in time not to be repeated again . Love that!

Just for those that don’t know how to read  labels all printings are the first appearance and origin of the turtles . A second print is just that and who cares if it came out in 84 it’s not diff to me than third . The only true special book is the OG and the others no matter how much collectors push another printing over another they just are not first prints .

The third printing of TMNT #1 is actually the most different when compared to the first and second printings.  It's definitely similar at a glance but there is a slight size differential (although all three printings do vary slightly in width).  However, the interior is where the major differences occur between the third and first/second printings.  There's far too much to list here but if you're interested, take a bit of time to read my series about The TMNT #1 Production Negatives (specifically from Part 10 on).  Those will provide you lots of info. about the first three printings of TMNT #1.  Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

I’m good and I obviously know there are differences but I’m trying to avoid debate on what’s better or what’s a more authentic first app issue . Owners of second prints have always pushed s their copies over thirds and to me I could care less . To the naked eye it’s almost the same . Value differs but takes nothing away from fact all three prints ( 1,2,3 ) I lump together visually .

Imho $240,000 is “amazingly astounding” “best offer price tag” for 9.8.
Even more-so, when a 9.6 finishes a couple weeks after in auction for $78,000.

Even more so when I have seen better looking 9.6's than 9.8's! Imagine whoever buys this resubs it and it comes back 9.8! $240k comic for $78k. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the new gamble.

The series about The TMNT #1 Production Negatives should be published! Makes for a very unique study. Thanks for this @rich_TMNT

A moment in time not to be repeated again sure but it can be recreated in the mind of the reader every time they pick up their #1 comic, sit down and re-read their favourite origin story of the comic that kickstarted it for them! Everybody's experience and introduction to #1 is different. Thanks for sharing yours @Subby1938

Thanks, I appreciate that.  I do hope to someday publish the articles in some type of book / comic book form.  My ultimate goal is to do a reprint of TMNT #1 directly from these negatives - lots of hurdles to that obviously but it would be amazing!

That would be amazing. I seriously hope this comes to pass. Will you reprint the comic to 3,000 copies using similar materials? Perhaps the comic could come bundled with the published article? Anyway very excited to hear your proposal, I can't wait to see what comes of it!

If I'm able to get a reprint done from the negatives, the goal would be to reproduce it as closely as possible to TMNT #1 1st printing (but I'd need to commission the covers - front back and interiors - since I don't have the negatives of those).  So, 3,275 copies (to replicate the 1st printing print run) would be part of it - along with probably the book containing the articles about the negatives.

Definitely something I won't give up on.

Epic. I hope the cover negatives are found. It could be the negatives were stored somewhere else if they were used to print the covers for all other later editions using the same #1 cover?

The cover negatives are long gone I'm afraid.  There's solid documented proof that the covers and interiors were printed by completely different printers and then later joined together at The Journal Tribune.  Since two printers were involved in the production of the book, both would have needed to save their production artifacts for TMNT #1 - but only one did.  I wrote an entire article about the missing cover negatives because it's actually quite interesting.

Honestly, the fact that the interior page negatives were retained is, in itself, quite remarkable (and only was done by an employee who thought they might somehow be valuable later).  Printing negatives are typically tossed after a time - or, at minimum, removed from their flats and stored in a file cabinet.  Having all 40 page negatives still arranged in the flats in the exact orientation used to burn the printing plates is pretty much a miracle.
