Heritage August Auction

Very cool Jack Davis VOH #28 splash page went for $6,572.50 with BP. Classic EC splashes like this look like a steal compared to some of the results.

Even 20K for the Frazetta Personal Love page seems pretty reasonable.

Of course you can :) I prefer auction format for something that is one of a kind. If I buy it off CAF I'm paying the seller's ask (or a modification of it) meaning that I have no idea what the market thinks its worth, just what I'm paying (which also means I might be overpaying by a ridiculous amount) Just what works for me and keeps me happy. Now of course I have about 5 cover pieces that I want eventually and I'm going to have to go through a broker to get because I never see pages from this come up let alone covers. That's when I'll go to CAF/broker to get those pieces but not ready for it yet (still hoping they come up in auction)

Heheh...well, hope you know I wasn't referring to you. I definitely understand how auctions can be more attractive to buyers, than paying someone's price tag. I get that for examples with limited comps (especially), collectors would rather decide for themselves what it's worth, than be told (by a dealer). They can decide for themselves at auction.

But when it comes to five figure or six figure art, such as this KJ...I would hope buyers would do their homework. In the end, though, it's a free country, it's their money, so to each their own.

O i didn't think you were :) And like I said, the KJ page was way out of my world. I went hard on the Turtles piece and lost on that :sorry: I know I'll be kicking myself later on that one.

I'm surprise at Kevin Eastman TMNT selling for $20k

No opinion of the price, but a very cool piece.

Has anyone made note of this?

$14K for GOTG...lettering.

I think it was just a very fortuitous auction timing. Everything GotG is white hot right now, even if it has nothing to do with the team in the movie. In the same way that the Turtles books yesterday both sold well south of GPA possibly because of the negative stink coming off the movie coming out today.

If the "first group shot" by Eastman can sell for 70K, then another 1983 group shot for 23k doesn't seem all too crazy. Two unpublished 1983 pinups for these prices makes you wonder why published pages from 1985 can be had for 1.5k+ though...

Now if Eastman can nab the $2 million asking for the very first Turtle drawing ever then I'd be truly surprised!

Good timing GOTG is the new white bread. I don't know if the OA sale of the comic sale: http://comics.ha.com/itm/silver-age-1956-1969-/marvel-super-heroes-18-guardians-of-the-galaxy-don-maggie-thompson-collection-pedigree-marvel-1969-cgc-nm-96-white-pag/a/7097-91395.s yesterday was more amazing.

Many know I have been trying to complete the book for over 20 years. While I would have loved to win the cover I have some of the best interior pages. It was the image of Jean that was the strong point for me. Yes I agree there are better Byrne FF covers, FF 244 would be my choice of the best image for me. The backs of the heads and the weird arm placement for she hulk which detract from the image.

As for the I item that eclipsed the FF 286 cover which I got at SDCC. I am getting the complete interiors to How to Draw the Marvel Way by Big a John Buscema. This includes prelim for the cover. also includes nova #12 cover, published inks plus separate full pencils and other rough prelims as seems in the book. They gems are the chapters titles all in full pencils.

That sounds very cool! :applause:

I never said I changed my mind about the cover. I was the under bidder my top bid was just effected by my big purchase at SDCC.

Acknowledged. I guess we just have different definitions of "going after it hard" for a "cover I have been after for years," especially after taking into account artist, cover, what it hammered for (I thought and I think several others thought it would hammer higher), etc.

As a potential buyer of the Byrne FF cover, I'd like to chime in. I got to meet Brian at San Diego and was really pulling for him to win it. I can see where Daren's coming from. Considering that Brian called the shot, I expected him to come in stronger. But I saw his SDCC purchase, and I can't fault him for emptying the piggy bank for it. Those interiors he got are awesome!

That said, I would put a bid in if I thought it went too cheaply. If I really wanted it, I would have asked Brian his top number. If it matched, or was more, than my number, I'd step aside. If my number was higher, Brian and I would have to talk about it. Despite our comraderie as collectors, the auction spoils go to the guy who spends most. I didn't bid because I'd have to spend 40k to take my shot, not because Brian called it.

The funny part of it, I was also pulling for Brian to win it (and I don't even know Brian!) but I thought for a guy that wants a cover that much, not only am I not going to bid, but I am going to root for him (absent other facts like a buddy wanting it equally as much).

But changing your max intended bid _is_ changing your mind. It changed from going for the piece hard to wanting it at a reasonable (for today's market) price.

You were doomed to take a hit as soon as you made your public pronouncement, it just ended being on credibility instead of the wallet.
