Yes. I ordered 10 copies for spidey 229 today to display on the wall and boost my self esteem when people come over and say, "oh cool I saw that on a list on the internet" :insane:

Don't get me wrong, there is some minimal effect as you say. But its a 1/10 on the who cares meter.

Understood. But one man's 1/10 motivation can be another man's 9/10.

There's no question that a higher percentage of people who are not hard corps comics fans are more likely to be aware of the Marvel drugs comics code story than they are about the significance GL 76 -- and that's just aside from any facts or opinions that one is or isn't a better work or art, or has more impact on hard corps comics fans,

YOu mean 0.000001 vs 0.000002% ? :)

Well... it's safe to say that close to 100% of the bidders knew about both those things because Heritage made it a point to stress them in the descriptions.

You saved me a bunch of typing. I kept going back and looking at the ASM 98 cover and was wondering if everyone had a typo.

GL 76 by a light year

If a classic, engaging cover of Spidey vs. the Green Goblin fills you with so much indifference that you have to check if it's a typo, that quite obviously speaks volumes about your inherent personal preference and bias more than it does about anything else. And, you also referenced a post that talked copiously about things that we are quite specifically trying to exclude from the conversation by just taking the covers at pure face value.

The Spidey cover is a 10/10 on the nad-pumping and giving your inner 12-year old a warm fuzzy feeling scale. Like Nelson said - it's a GREAT comic book cover that does what it's supposed to. No discussion of technical artistic merit, historical relevance, influence, market value, or which underlying comic or piece of art is more valuable is required. Or desired. (thumbs u

lol

no bias at all. There are a dozen, or more, covers in the first 100 issues of Spider-Man that I prefer over the 98. Truth be told, I've never really been a fan of the series. My brother collected it though, so I did see them all each month as he bought them. 98 never stood out to me, and is comparable to 97 by an large. If I had to choose a Goblin cover it would probably be 40, on purely artistic style and composition. For MY tastes, I hasten to add. If i add context, then I would, of course, prefer 14. If I could have any cover of the first 100, other than #1, it would probably be 100. Although 33, 50 and 55 are pretty "nad-pumping" as well

Your bias must be showing. Only a die hard Spidey fan would see 98 as all that special against the amount of classic covers in the first 100 issues of the series. Context removed, solely on the art.

55 ? really ? hm

Yeah I'm not going near that one. :insane:

Back on topic, what did you think of the Groo result? Nice half-splash but from an early Image. I was surprised at nearly $2k.

I was surprised as well although it was nice. At less than 1k, I was interested, above 1k and I lost interest.

Yeah 55, safe to say, does not pump my nads. Besides if we are going to make sexual references lets incorporate #62 into the discussion. Spidey the Submissive tied up and bent over! :insane::sick:

I thought the Star Trek #1 cover OA went for a low amount considering the cross collecting of Star Trek fans as well a Comic Book collectors, it being a #1 and the announcement recently of a new TV show on CBS streaming in 2017.

I thought the same think about the gold key Star Trek cover. Went for about half of what the previous one did in the signature auction.

So many Star Trek series in comics.

Speaking of kinkade...

I had someone in the office tell me about this amazing artist and wonderful work that was quite expensive and when I finally got the name out of them it was tom kinkade :insane:lol

I dated a girl that found out I was into art, so she told me all about this Kinkade guy (whom I'd never heard of)...interesting...then I saw the images online, the lame hand-touched "print" marketing scheme, the glossy brochures and catalogs, and finally the many franchise stores scattered around the country. Mostly God's Country. I was -like- "wow" and couldn't believe anybody could fall for that. It was really too bad. She was not stupid, athletic and rather sexy; we parted ways soon after :)

the person in my office is of faith as well. Kinkade made inroads in that market I guess.

"Of faith", a very kind way of putting it. Sometimes I forget there is a gentle touch that can be employed :)

This one, seemed a good catch upfront (no pun, but still there for you Bronty), but ended up she could only receive pleasure but not give it...because she wasn't certain she loved me. Seemed pretty selfish to me! What would Jesus do?

sounds like she broke your heart. :(

The ultimate guide is my wife who hates all things comic related and refers to me as an embarrassment a few times every day.

Her take on anything that features a woman on it is that it is porn. The life story of Mother Teresa managed to avoid that moniker but it was a close run thing. (Dazzler is 'hard core porn')

Are we secretly married to the same woman? :whatthe:

Exactly. I'm admittedly not a Spiderman fan, nor a Romita fan, so nostalgia doesn't influence my opinion of ASM covers at all.

ASM 98 doesn't stand out and probably would not even be in my top 20 ASM covers.

So show him GL #76 and ASM #98 and tell us which one he likes better. Or don't BECAUSE IT DOESN'T MATTER.

He would probably pick the ASM #98, because he clearly has bad taste.

Fun conversation to follow re the GL/ASM debate. As a collector, these issues both came out before I discovered comics so they both fall into the "back issue" category for me. I much more of a Marvel fan but GL was one my favorite DC characters. Overall, I would rank Spidey ahead in terms of what I read and collected. Personally, I like both covers and I am not sure where I would land which means I find them very similar in terms of appeal ... not sure which side of the debate that places me.

One thing we all agree upon is that the Bill S. cover is remarkable!
