Why do I feel like you'd have a room that looks like mine with about 300 long and short/magazine/cgc boxes?

Lol it's surfaced the floor lol

I call it comic paneling haha, and yet, there isn't much more space, along with other things, there is just not much "more."

I count maybe 20 boxes. I used to keep that many under my desk in my office.

Hello All!

FINALLY got around to doing something I've been talking about for literally years now.  We've been in our house for a while and I've always had this space carved out for my collection, but it's always been an unfinished room with exposed lumber, beams, and ducts along with a concrete floor with a (non-rectangular) carpet remnant on it.  Now we've added another outlet, finished the walls and ceiling, painted, and put down some carpet with a proper pad underneath.  The difference is night and day.  Take a look:

After:

I made the choice to go with a green carpet with a pale green carpet so the room would feel even more unique in our house.  Additionally, I think it goes well with my collecting focus, which as anyone who knows me would tell you is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Current:

There are a number of things I would still like to do:

  • My main method of comic storage is the modular Comic Cube setup.  I got these in 2020 and I absolutely LOVE them.  The drawers are very sturdy and the fact that they're modular make them reasonable to move myself if necessary.  I like them so much that I already put in another order for a smaller 2x3 setup for magazine-sized books to hold my magazine slabs and some overflow raws and hardcovers.  Currently they're still in standard comic boxes in the corner that isn't showcased.  I hope to provide an update later this year once the Comic Cube is done and in-place.
  • I've got a few art pieces that are already earmarked for professional framing and now I've got the space on the wall for them.  Again, I'll update once I get them.
  • I'd like to 3D print and paint a 1/4 scale Mouser or two to display with my 1990 Turtles in the display case.  Just a fun side project to work on.
  • Now that I know the space I'm working with, I'll probably let go of a few pieces that I don't think I'd plan on displaying so I can fund these other plans.  It's a vicious cycle.  lol

Anyway, I'm very excited and just wanted to share.  Thanks for looking!

That looks so good man. Love those comic cubes.

Really awesome setup!! I just did the exact same thing in my basement. Started off similar to yours and ended up looking the same too, just with a different color. Congrats, I know how you feel.

In addition to being a comic collector and college football fan, I am a novice woodworker. Generally making storage and small misc things for my wife's sewing room or the garage.

I recently completed the 1st (of 4) comic drawers for my ikea billy book cases.

The drawer in mounted on undermount drawer slides, it allows access for about 300 comics (360+ if i packed them in there).

The front plexiglass slides full length to the left to change out the display comics.

I added the full width aluminum pull handle for accent and to match my aviation club chair.

My collection currently resides in the magazine boxes across the top of the bookshelves. Which will be relocated to the drawers and allow for some larger display items to be put on top.

I currently own about 800 single issues, (5 slabs displayed elsewhere in the room).

Awesome to see another Valiant collector. I’m pretty close to completing my collection of 90s of Valiant titles. I think you are on to something pretty exceptional with the drawers for the book case. Is really like to see more of them. Maybe you could take some pictures while you are building the next ones and make a little tutorial. I think a lot of people would find it very useful.

Thanks for the kind words

I do plan on taking pictures of the next drawer to share this info to include measurement and hardware, here and on the facebook woodworkers group.

I love my Valiant comics, I have everything Pre-Unity and Unity (including the variants and mail-in) and more than a few post Unity. I am working on my VVSS and some other variants.
